Another higher upside signing. Ks per 9 went up 2 last yr to 7.5 Ks per 9 while avg fastball went up to 94.1 mph. Ditched his slider for a more efficient cutter. Still only 28 yrs old. Looks like Price is definitely gone soon and this could be the first domino. All starters are currently left handed except Eovaldi

The Padres have Myers to offset salary, Cards w Carpenter, and Angels w Upton. The Reds and White Sox don't have similar salary dump players that make sense so I bet these teams also want Benintendi or another young player attached and then the Sox get a good prospect back

They also got Basabe and Rutherford to a extent. I don't even see the White Sox even interested in Price. Why would they want to deal with the decline of Price with a lot of the costs included? They're probably going to want to be competitive, but they're probably better served through free agency first/trades of their prospect depth. I could see them wanting Price, I think he could fill in nicely as their 3 starter but I don't see them trading talent like Madrigal or Vaughn in a deal for Price. I don't see Price being traded until later in the offseason when the 2nd/3rd tier of starting pitchers start signing. Teams that whiff on guys like Keuchel/Ryu/MadBum and still need starting pitching would maybe see Price as a good consolation prize. The way the Red Sox get a good prospect like Madrigal is by attaching Benintendi to Price and paying down Price's salary. He would be a good veteran pitcher for that team. He is well known as a great teammate and would be a veteran leader for their young pitching staff

Chad Jennings, Red Sox beat reporter for the Athletic, said him and Peter Gammons actually talked about this rumor yesterday involving the White Sox and could see a deal like that happening w attaching Benny w Price to get good prospects. He said this in his live chat going on right now. Said there is widespread interest in Benintendi across the league

Gammons is on MLB Network right now. Said he's heard a rumor of Benny and Price for Andrew Vaughn and Madrigal. Doesn't know if it will work out. Depends on how much the Sox pay down on Price. This should be the kind of deal Bloom and co are searching for. I saw a couple people on twitter mentioning Price possibly to the White Sox yesterday. We'll see I guess

Rays trade OF Tommy Pham and a prospect to the Padres for Hunter Renfroe and stud SS prospect Xavier Edwards. Another great trade by the Rays. Pham, 31 yrs old, signed for 2 more yrs while Renfroe, 27 yrs old, under control for 4 more yrs. Edwards, a switch hitter, was 38th overall pick in 2018 draft. These are the type of creative deals that Chaim Bloom needs to make to pare payroll and add youth to the Sox and improve the farm system. I hope to see some similar deals like this made by the Sox in the coming weeks.

Jeff Passan of ESPN also said that the Sox are shopping their high priced starters to create financial flexibility. I bet someone will trade for Price after they lose out on Cole/Strasburg. Bloom will have to get creative but maybe a deal with the Angels involving Upton, the Rangers involving Choo/Mazara or Odor, or the Dodgers involving Pollock. Should definately be an interesting next few weeks

The more I look at teams that match up well on a Mookie deal the one team that stands out is the Padres. They are ready to take the next step to compete in the NL and their GM may be under more pressure. They have a top farm system w pitching and cheap controllable OFers. I can see a deal of Mookie for Luis Urias (cheap 2B and former top prospect), one of their OFers (Margot or Renfroe), and a pitcher like Quantrill or another prospect. I would like a deal like this. Realistic?

I don't know how DDo can go into the season with this bullpen as constructed right now. Ottavino for $9 mill per yr is a steal. Just above what Kelly got. Sox have lowest % spent on the bullpen in the majors, meanwhile the Yanks have the most dominant bullpen in baseball. Starters only need to pitch 5 innings and is a wrap. Sucks to see him sign so cheap and then worse when it's the Yanks

What would it take to get Archie Bradley from Arz? He has, I think three years of control left. Not heard his name at all, but seems like an outside option in a trade.... This was the first name I thought of if the D'Backs actually have interest in JBJ to fill their CF void

What constitutes a mutual option? Can the team opt in to another year? Can JD still opt out?

Usually I don't like opt-outs because it throws the risk-reward calculation totally out of whack. The David Price contract is a great example - if a player isn't good enough to opt out on the front end, then he's almost always an albatross on the back end. They risked $210M on a pitcher with essentially zero chance of the equivalent $210M production as a reward. Even if he'd been, like, Kershaw or Scherzer type of good for those three years, then he's worth, what... maybe $120M? That's not the case here. Unless Martinez just totally flops, the Red Sox did fine here. If he mashes for a couple years and opts out, that's great, everyone is happy. But there's also a chance he plays something like 2016 Hanley Ramirez and isn't quite good enough to opt out but also isn't a burdensome contract. The way I see it is it's either a 2/$50M, a 3/$72M or a 5/$110M contract. Any of those 3 contracts are perfectly fine with me. After 2 years he will be 33 and his team choices will probably be the 14 in the AL that have an opening at DH. I doubt an NL team would want him as an OFer 2 years from now. Encarnacion only got 3 yrs @ 60 so JDM will probably at least opt in to the third year to guarantee him the 72 million. Will all depend on the market that year. I think the opt outs could go either way but great job by Dombrowski to make the deal fair for both sides. Wish the opt out was after 3 years but, either way, it serves as added motivation for JD to mash.

At this point I think it's best for the Sox to blink and seal the deal by offering a 6th year option or increasing their 5 yr offer to get this DONE! Not worth the distraction anymore and the Sox desperately need a middle order hitter to help the rest of the lineup fit into place. Rotate him in and out of the OF with Benny and go into spring training next week. The rest of the free agents will then start to sign with the top hitter signed and the off-season will finally start to fall into place. IMO that's the reason there are so many free agents still because the top guys still haven't signed.

Here is the article: Boras: J.D. Martinez not 'fed up' with Red Sox Evan Drellich 21 min ago
A report of hurt feelings may have left some hurt feelings.
J.D. Martinez’s agent, Scott Boras, outright denied to NBC Sports Boston that Martinez has expressed feelings of being fed up with the Red Sox, as was reported on Tuesday.
“J.D. Martinez has never made any statement regarding the Red Sox,” Boras said Wednesday. "J.D. is involved in multiple negotiations and is pleased with the participants and the good-faith process. Suggestions otherwise are not accurate."
MORE RED SOX: Jackie Bradley Jr.'s comfort in Boston should be highly valued
Boras as well as Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski both acknowledged negotiations are ongoing between the Sox and Martinez. Boras said as much on Tuesday night as well. (LINK:http://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red-sox/boras-red-sox-still-negotiation-jd-martinez)
Per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Martinez has been telling people he’s fed up with the Red Sox. That sentiment would be understandable, given how late in free agency it is and how good a hitter Martinez is.
“We continue to speak with Scott as well as other agents,” Dombrowski said. “Also, Ken called me about that [sentiment from Martinez] and I was surprised. However, even he indicated he did not know if that was true.”
Indeed, Rosenthal noted in the story that “it’s difficult to imagine why he would be upset with a team reportedly willing to give him a nine-figure deal.”

This could be an interesting option: @bnightengale The Boston #Redsox and Cleveland #Indians talked about potential Edwin Encarnacion and Jackie Bradley swap during winter that died on the vine. Will Redsox revisit or keep waiting for JD Martinez?
