Alright I'm ready to present my pipe dream for the rest of the off season. This is based largely on me wildly overanalyzing them keeping Brasier to mean they're blowing past the tax limit this year.
1. Overpay and give Xander SS money to play LF. Starting to think keeping Xander is key in getting Devers to extend.
2. Sign Correa for SS
3. Trade Verdugo, Houck, Yorke, and Duran to Marlins for Pablo Lopez. Dugie likely gets flipped at the deadline for a nice return for the Marlins and they can give Houck and Duran the run they need to get through growing pains.
4. Sign Haniger for RF. Not the savior of the team, I get that he's basically a Renfroe clone, but they could use a solid average regular.
5. Sign Josh Bell for DH
Bonus: Sign Senga, let Eovaldi walk for the pick. Helps them not have to rely on any of Sale/Paxton/Whitlock to stick in the rotation and be healthy
Probably <1% chance this all happens. Even if they overspent like this, it requires the players involved to also want it. As Eflin proves, not everyone is dying to come up north to Boston.

I'm with Jmei. I really like this and am annoyed at myself for not thinking of it as an option. It has a sentimental benefit to it on top of just making sense.
And if he stinks halfway through the year, they can just dump him on the White Sox for a solid backup catcher and a lottery ticket.

I don’t understand that Hunter Henry call at all. Did the ball even touch the ground? Yeah I'm unable to get past this one, I understand the rule and have gotten use to it but...that didn't hit the ground? Even all the announcers repeatedly said while watching on slow-mo that his hand was underneath and then the ball comes loose as he turns. That is unequivocally, by the rules, a catch

Not trying to pile on here, just providing a helpful resource that I tout on this forum and Twitter a lot. www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/Your proposed trade gives the Marlins 44.9 in value and the Red Sox 140.1. Then keep in mind the 140.1 number the Sox need to hit is assuming the Marlins are ready to sell for fair market value, which they are not. Probably need to overpay by another 20 to get them to the table.

Yeah your point about DeAngelo is the thought I had. I'm 100% against this and would have been 100% against DeAngelo, but at least DeAngelo was a proven talent. Was this really worth it for a 4th rounder? I can't even understand the move from like a cold unempathetic point of view. Before his past surfaced he was considered a top 10 pick and when it came to light what he did to Joni Meyer-Crothers he still was considered late first round pick, but the backlash from the media was overwhelming he slipped to the 4th round. He is a talented offensive defenseman and when you have the worst farm system in the NHL the Bruins felt like he was worth the chance. I will always have a hard time rooting for him, but hope he becomes a better person from this lesson in life. Thanks for the clarification, I had the timeline wrong and thought it all came out after the draft

By no stretch would I defend what little I know about his past however we are talking about his Jr. High past, should be have to carry a scarlet letter the rest of his life for stupidity he commited as a very young teen? Cam checked out his past and feels he deserves another chance. Shouldn't most people get a second chance? I think he should get a second chance to make a life for himself, i view living an elite lifestyle playing professional sports as a privilege though and what he did imo eliminates that privilege. This wasn’t a one time incident, he more or less tortured a handicapped black kid for a period of like 7 years and hasn’t really shown genuine remorse for it according to the victims family. This includes physically beating him, calling him the N word, and giving him a piece of candy that he wiped in a urinal To an organization that says they pride themselves on character and diversity this should be a disqualifying situation . Would’ve rather they had just gotten Tony DeAngelo a couple years ago if they were ok with scumbags. Bergeron seemed awfully uncomfortable being trotted out there to do SweeNeely’s damage control too. Probably wondering why tf he came back for minimum dollars to do this BS for those two morons. Even beyond all of the specifics- why make this signing right now when there is so much positivity around the team? Now there is a media firestorm, both local and national/international. Unfathomably dumb. Yeah your point about DeAngelo is the thought I had. I'm 100% against this and would have been 100% against DeAngelo, but at least DeAngelo was a proven talent. Was this really worth it for a 4th rounder? I can't even understand the move from like a cold unempathetic point of view.

Idk if I'm just being a grumpy curmudgeon watching from the outside in these playoffs, but watching the Phillies just steal the exact same song as the Red Sox last year for their playoff run is cringy and weird to me. If Plawecki had gone to them, that's one thing. But part of the charm with it last year was how random of a song it was to rally around as a group of grown men.

Basically dead even per MLB Trade Values, but I'm very low on Baty. It'd have to be an overpay like Parada + Mauricio + lottery ticket for me to be interested, and this is only if it's clear they can't extend Devers due to an exorbitant asking price.

Weird seeding aside, I feel like they got expanded playoffs right this time around. Expanding to get the one-game playoff sucked. Going all in at the deadline for a chance at a one game play in makes no sense.
Four different three game series is pretty exhilarating as a baseball fan and allows each team to flex their whole top half of the rotation.

Start a new era. Get Mike Monaco in there with Middlebrooks and/or Youk and ride the growing pains. Within a few years they could have a rockstar pair that lasts 30+ years. Familiarity is pretty huge with fans, the nostalgia of the Don & Remy booth is something that just every fan I know thinks back fondly on. Need to attempt to create that nostalgic feel through consistency in the booth.

I won't lose sleep over it, but this trade still confuses me. Pham was supposed to have negative value, I'm pretty sure trading nothing for him got rejected by the baseball trade values model saying it was an overpay by the Red Sox. Adding anything but a bag of balls just makes it even weirder to me.
That said, still a nice pickup and if they were over the CBT anyways, I have no real issue with the deal.

Joey Meneses is absolutely raking with the Nationals right now.
7HR in 25 games with a 1.011 OPS as a 30 year old rookie. Couldn't be happier for the guy

I'll note for anyone else who might have a strong reaction to this, these were his pre-season ranks: Mayer: 22 Casas: 46 Yorke: 47 Kiley was never particularly high on Casas and it's entirely possible he only has him dropping a few spots due to his injury this year.

I went in person and while it's cool to say I was there, man that was not worth it. Wound up sitting in the 90° sun for about 5 hours all to watch on the jumbotron anyways. The things we do for this sport

Little concerned about the toxic relationship I'm in with baseball given the massive avalanche of serotonin I got from knowing the emotional manipulation I've endured for 4 months is over.
Now I get to live the rest of my life chasing the high of reading a Jeff Passan "baseball is back" tweet again.

The Ullmarks, Forborts, Coyles of the world are why I have a tough time getting 100% into the Bruins. I used to be diehard, but when I just straight up don't trust the GM I struggle. With Bloom and Belichick and possibly Stevens now, if I don't understand a move I give them the benefit of the doubt.
With Sweeney you see a deal and immediately know it's a terrible idea. It's been infuriating watching the best line in the NHL make only 1.5x combined what the highest single player salary is, and have it completely wasted.

I genuinely don't understand this even from a business perspective of the league. Right now they're competing to attract top talent athletes to the sport, namely against the NBA and NFL. Those sports have the advantage that for most people, once you're drafted, you're making more money than you've ever seen. Meanwhile in baseball you get exploited for years just for a chance at that same minimum salary.
Wouldn't it make sense to set up a pay system for minor leaguers that attracts top talent? Allows them to support their families while chasing their dream? Wouldn't the payout of pulling more stars into the league far exceed the proportionally tiny cost of paying the minor leaguers?
The current system, much like unpaid internships, makes it so that only the people with enough financial privilege can afford to go through it. You're restricting your talent pool immensely for small short term savings. At a loss

That has to be definitive proof that the OT rule needs to change. I could not have cared less who won that game, all I care is that I feel robbed as a football fan because I didn't get to see Josh Allen's response.
Still, that was so much fun to watch

Just in case anyone is wondering what sport to get their kid into. Wander Franco is 20, won't get take a helmet to helmet hit a day in his life, and the minimum he'll make in his career is $182 million.

Ward probably gets picked. Jimenez might too. If you have ample short term (ie: 2021 off-season) 40-man space it does seem pretty low downside to take Ward. Stick him on the 60-day DL come spring, then in the fall you have the first look at him after recovery. If he pulls a Whitlock and looks filthy, congrats he's an easy stash in 2023. If he's washed up, send him back to the Sox and you lost a whopping 50k out of it.

I just need to say I was against the Kiké signing. I never posted it here or even said it out loud, but I was against it and the only time I've ever been more wrong is when I was convinced this Mookie kid in Salem was a bust.

Hard to get a good night’s sleep with the Sox delivering so many electrifying wins lately. Hoping to wake up tired tomorrow! Would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous about Eduardo, but no sense it seems to me in doing anything other than simply rooting hard for him and hoping he can stun everyone and deliver a memorable performance to help seal this series. We know he is capable of it. If he even just delivered something like his start in the WS against LA, while maybe not “memorable” like I mentioned above, would do the job well tonight. I was at last night's game and after getting home at 12:30am, I just sat there wide awake for 3 hours still high off that ending. Hands down most fun game I've ever been to.
