If the bullpen needs help, I expect Kopech to be promoted to AA in the next week or so, and then get called up to MLB this year. The thinking is, if they feel they need help in the bullpen they will try Kopech out and see what he can do. Kopech has no chance to be called up to BOS this year. None. Further, there is no reason to promote him to Portland, when he can stay in Salem and pitch in at least one playoff game. He needs the innings.

Given my sometimes obsessive nature, I still have fantasies of the Redsox getting the best of both worlds- several Pomeranz starts, watching Rodriguez stabilize, and clay and Johnson, Elias and Owens do so a bit- and now rescind the trade. I guess that's a no go because of the relationships with not just SD, but everyone else, and also their belief that Pomeranz will do better the next few years and be helpful now. My fantasies clearly appear to be better than your fantasies. Both, however, have the same chance of happening (none).

Papelbon is a low risk high reward option. He's also our saves leader. Being a class act organization, we could at least give him a chance and if it doesn't work out he can retire with us. I think its a win-win for both sides. Your second sentence is silly; the Red Sox should make a baseball decision, and Pap is not so universally loved within the organization that there is any risk that the organization will make a tug-at-the-heartstrings decision in any event. Hey, let's check in on Bob Stanley! Seriously, there is still a roster issue. If Taz needed to go on the DL, then maybe Pap could be a possibility to be added to the roster, since you can then bring up Hembree and Kelly and add back Taz on Sept. 1 without repercussion if Pap duds out. Otherwise, I don't see who he replaces on the 25-man roster.

Who are you demoting/releasing from the team for Papelbon? Interesting. amfox1 first would you pick up pap, and if you did who would you demote/release I would not pick him up. He's no longer a late inning option, despite his 19 saves this year. I'd keep things as-is right now and would not panic.

Cubs went from 73-89 to 97-65 to 73-41 this year. So how is it crazy to say a 78 win team can go to 95 wins? It's not crazy at all if you do the things the Cubs did to improve. Using an outlier to prove a point is usually not a good way to argue, especially if you are only going to focus on the win-loss record without analyzing the reasons behind it.

You mean, he has to do actual research? On his own?
Perhaps we like barney27 the way he is now - shoot first, aim later
(hint: it took me about 30 seconds to look up Willis' bio and see he had worked with Cliff Lee, C.C. Sabathia and Felix Hernandez, but good luck with that "he's worked with no quality big league pitchers" argument)

Given the bullpen and Benny's ascendance to the full-time LFer, not a surprise. Perhaps only a surprise that it's Elias and not Kelly.

They should have done surgery months ago when it happened. Please explain why. Generally Grade 1/Grade 2 sprains do not require surgery, but I'd be interested in your diagnosis and treatment analysis.

Rusney makes 10.5M this year and in 2017, $11M in 2018 and 2019, and 13.5M in 2020. Rusney can opt out after 2019, although I don't see a reason why he would. Puig makes 5.5M this year, 6.5M in 2017 and 7.5M in 2018. Puig also has an opt out when he hits 3 years of service time. I'm down on Puig because he seems selfish, immature, and a headache, and his numbers have declined every year, but we are literally doing nothing with Castillo. We are treating him like Allen Craig, paying him not to play so that his salary doesn't count against the cap. I'd trade Castillo for Puig just to get out of the money difference, even if I release Puig right afterward. Keep in mind that Castillo's money doesn't count for luxury tax purposes unless and until he is added back to the 40-man roster. That is a big benefit to us (and moreso to the Dodgers). BTW, I would absolutely make the trade. Even with the luxury tax savings, I cannot see LAD making the trade without getting some positive value back; they'd be better off trading Puig for a bag of balls than Castillo.
