Another rough start for Trey Ball. At least he didn't walk anyone... 🙄

I'd rather burn Abad than Kimbrel anytime of the week in a really low pressure situation. Even in a game where they've already burned Kimbrel? Even if Kimbrel wants to stay in the game and could use an inning and has gone through his whole warm up routine? That doesn't make any sense to me. And suppose they rush to get Abad ready, he's not warm, and throws up a stinker and it's a game again? They've got their best reliever in the game already, he's rested and he wants to pitch. Give him the three outs and call it a day. I agree with you in the sense that JF has made much, much, much worse decisions than this. And there is an understandable logic/ rationale, which you very clearly articulated, for keeping Kimbrel in the game. Respectfully, however, I think you may be somewhat underestimating the potential consequences of using Kimbrel in that inning. Yes, warming up a pitcher is a fairly intensive process. But you're making it sound like once a pitcher is warmed up, then it's not that big of a deal to send him out because he's already been "burned (JF utilized such logic in his usage of Koji)." Let me say three things to that: 1- I've never thrown a 100 mph fastball but I have to imagine even in non-stressful game situations there's still a strain on your arm. Now take this strain and do it 14 or 15 times, which is the number of pitches he threw in the 9th. This strain, isolated to one game, isn't a big deal. But wear and tear is a cumulative process. Considering I have high hopes for a long post-season run, I'd just as soon save Kimbrel's bullets for October, not 6-run games in May. 2- you're forgetting he had to warm up during the 8th, pitch in the 8th, wait during the top of the 9th, warm up again because the top of the 9th while it wasn't long wasn't short either, and then had throw 15 plus fastballs. 3- yes, putting abad (I would have put in Barnes to give him some more work in less stressful situations to work on his consistency) in has potential drawbacks. He could have a stinker and it's a game again. But, you could literally use that exact rationale in every game. So should kimbrel be used every game? Ultimately if you can't trust a pitcher to pitch in a six- run game then get rid of said pitcher. Yes, kimbrel is a great closer but it's up to a manager to manage. That means taking a short-term and long-term perspective and doing what's best for the team. Of course kimbrel would have wanted to go back out; he's a competitor. I wouldn't want someone on the team that didn't want to go back out. But, again, a manager's job is one of managing player usage and maintaining the effective utilization of assets. Six run games in the 9th are the domain for innings-eaters not elite closers. Kimbrel shouldn't have been sent out in the 9th. Just my two cents.

I can't see the Phillies not being a major player here. They only have like 7 million in guaranteed commitments next year. They have in the past spent 200 million plus on payroll. They have a very solid fan base. No way their fans will be okay with the team not making a major push for at least one of the players already mentioned, especially when they have the money to do it.

He's at 100 pitches, and they have a comfortable lead. I'd take him out now while vibes are good. I'd let him go after first batter and take him out after. Let him have a standing O from the crowd as he heads to the dugout.

If Price has a ligament issue -- I think reports said the doctors told him that they'd recommend surgery if he were younger -- maybe they are better off shutting him down and considering more permanent solutions. That probably means surgery, but maybe it's more extensive rehab and/or platlet therapy. But it is hard to imagine he is right, and it is hard to imagine that getting much better. I hear what you're saying. But it's still early. If he's feeling no pain, then we have to consider that's he's still essentially in spring training mode.

I saw Chris Cornell sing with Pearl Jam (essentially Temple of the Dog) at Pearl Jam 20. I was pretty amazed that his voice was still as good as it was at his age. They performed the entire Temple of the Dog album split between two days I believe. I feel lucky to have seen it. Dude, that's awesome. Saw Soundgarden and audioslave (multiple times) but never got to see Chris and Eddie together.

I don’t often post but tonight’s game shows how bad of a manager Farrell is in NL parks. First issue – Pinch hitting Hanley in the top of the 7th for Porcello with 2 outs and nobody on. Why? Porcello was only at 87 pitches and could easily have completed another inning. The Red Sox have NO bullpen and can use as many innings out of their starters as they can get. Second issue – Why pitch Kelly to only three batters when it’s a tie game in the 8th inning? The Red Sox have the bottom of their order coming up in the 9th inning. The best chance for the Red Sox to score another run is going to be in the 10th inning. You need to get more than 2 outs from Kelly. Agreed on both points. The removing Kelly decision is an especially baffling one.

www.weei.com/sports/boston/this-just-in/213548761/sale-helps-push-e-rod-down-right-path-winSale playing the role of the leader. Him and Betts have unquestionably become the face of the franchise- “I mean, I got out of that inning and Porz [Rick Porcello} and Sale come to me, and Sale just tells me, ‘Hey man.’ That was the key to get back in the game. He just tells me, ‘This is where the men go out and show who you are. Just go there and try to limit the damage and fight,’ you know what I mean? I think that helped me a lot to get back in the game.” Porcello needs to follow his own advice. Friggin Clown! Ummm.... did you watch the game? He did just that. The second inning could have been much worse. But he sucked it up and prevented the inning from being a true disaster. After he got out of that inning, he pitched well and kept us in the game.

God, I would love Harper on the Sox after 18 (if not before). I'd do a 10-year, $30M a year deal and even give him an opt-out after 4. My sense is even that won't be enough. That wouldn't be close to enough. Stanton's extension at age 25 was 13 years for $325M with an opt-out after year 6. There is no way that Harper takes less than that. 10 for $375 is where the conversation will start. Agreed-- Harper has said repeatedly that he sees himself as a $40 million a year player, and I think he gets that. In the end, I don't see him staying in Washington (sadly because I live in the area and enjoy watching him bat-- his batting practices are insane) because the nats are going to be terrible in a few years. I doubt Harper will want to spend years with a rebuilding team.

JBJ should be a 4th Outfielder. A defensive specialist that comes into the game in the later innings. He should not be a regular starter getting to bat in the 6th inning down by 1 with men on 1st & 3rd. I can’t believe I’m getting drawn into this, but fine. Let’s do this: 1- Enough of the JBJ OPS of .710. Last year his OPS was .835. Your decision to completely ignore what he did at the beginning of the year speaks volumes about the overall quality of your “argument.” I’d also like to point out his OPS of .832 in 2015. 2- But you want to highlight the negatives of JBJ—once he got into his slump. That’s fine. Let’s compare JBJ’s “.710” OPS against the three other people you mentioned should take over for him: Chris Young: Love the guy. Great clubhouse player and a veteran who will give you a good quality at bat (most of the time). Except he adds nothing defensively AND his OPS this season is “only” .722. This hardly makes him a candidate for more at-bats. Brock Holt: Hope he gets over his vertigo problems. Great story. Great guy. But he’s an above-average utility infielder. That’s it. In his best year, 2015, his OPS was .727. JBJ’s “.710” OPS is better than Holt’s career OPS average of .705. Oh and then there’s this: Holt has hit 13 homers in his ENTIRE major league career. JBJ hit 26 last year…. Steve Selsky: I hope he becomes the next Brock Holt, I really do. He’s a nice piece they were able to pick up from the trash heap. But he has nowhere near the defensive value of Jackie (I didn’t even realize he’s almost a year older than JBJ too). He has 63 whole plate appearances in the bigs. This is the guy you want replacing someone with back-to-back .800+ OPS seasons? Remember earlier this season (I forget who we were paying), when we were clinging to a one run lead and JF starting warming up Abad-- even though the other team had no lefties anywhere in their lineup? Remember that doozie? You’re approaching that level of logic. When I watch a Red Sox game, I worry that whoever is manning third base is going to airmail another ball over Moreland’s head…. When I watch a Red Sox game, I worry about any reliever not named Kimbrel taking the mound… When I watch a Red Sox game, I worry that Mookie is going to set a MLB record for most solo home runs in a season… When I watch a Red Sox game, I worry Pedey is going to hit into another double play… When I watch a Red Sox game, I worry about any pitch that even grazes Mookie’s legs, arms, head, body, fingers, big toe, etc…. When I watch a Red Sox game, I worry that’d JF is going to go “ya know what, I think Kyle Kendrick got a bum deal, let’s start him for a few more games because why the heck not?”…. In short, I have many other things to worry about besides JBJ, and so should this team.

I don't understand the question. Are there other, potentially better options available? There's no minor leaguer knocking on the door begging for playing time. I like Young but think he'll get exposed playing full time. Plus, jbj's babip last time I checked was fairly low. He's streaky and been somewhat unlucky this season. We have more pressing problems (re: third base and bullpen and fifth starter) than a streaky center fielder with good power and plus defense. Or am I missing something? I don't understand the question - The Question is; How long should the Red Sox wait on JBJ? Are there other, potentially better options available? - Yes, Young & Selsky. Holt when he is back (though he should probably man 3B) am I missing something? - Yes, JBJ is a hole in the line up Ummm.... you do know Young's ops this season is .722, right? Again, I like Young, but his offense does not equal jbj's defense and offensive potential. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to change my screen name to mike trout jr jr.... but that ship ain't sailing. PS- if you think Brock holt is better offensively than jbj, then I suggest you take a look at Holt's numbers.

So since the end of his hitting streak last May 26th, he has 21 HR in 478 at-bats with an OPS of .710 and great defense, and this supposed to be unacceptable? Is that the premise here? Yeah, that's what's known as a hole in the lineup, obviously. D'uh!!
