Just anecdotally Masa's swing right now seems to have him rolling over the top of balls. Looks like he's turning his wrists early.

Watching all these elite pitchers dropping like flies makes me uncomfortable giving ANY pitcher $300m ever again. I think 4-5 years is long enough given all the risk involved for the signing team. We’ll see if the industry starts to adjust to this “new normal”. Unfortunately you'll never get a star pitcher if you won't sign those deals. The Red Sox have the pockets to take these risks. I just hope the league as a whole starts implementing more opt out and protection clauses. My hope is that they find a way to protect pitchers and prevent the injuries.

Always worth remembering that Amtrak has a station in the Angels' parking lot. It's the easiest half-hour ride from LA there is. Even if that's not your origin, driving to some other stop like Fullerton or whatever and taking the train the rest of the way will save a butt-load of driving stress. I wanted to do this but unfortunately the final train departs around 9:30p and I don’t wanna rush outta the game to catch it : / Having a train station at the ballpark then ensuring that it's unusable for game days is the biggest slap in the forehead dumb nonsense I've heard today.

Are different people allowed to have different criteria for how they compare and rank players? Nobody is stopping anyone from that. There's no guarantee you won't be criticized for it though.

SSS and all I know but if one series is any indicator O'Neill is a very good fit for the OF as currently assembled with his RHH power and solid fielding ability. He is a guy I'd like to try and keep around if a reasonable contract can be agreed upon. Even with arguably their best prospect being an OFer in Roman Anthony, O'Neill still fits well with the long-ish term makeup of the team since Anthony is a LHH and they will need RHH pop from somewhere in the lineup. As far as I can tell it doesn't appear they have much if any RHH pop coming up through the minors in the next few years, certainly not in the OF. If he's a 25+ homer guy with good defense in the corners and looks to (finally) be healthy in 6 months, does O'Neill get QO'd? Pivetta could also be a QO option, no? I was shocked the other day when I realized that all of Casas, Devers, Antony, Teel, and Mayer are left handed hitters. Wonder if there's a big trade somewhere just to try to acquire a good young righty?

Wait pitching machine technology isn't good enough to consistently throw a 95mph fastball when you want it to throw a 95mph fastball? Get it together robots and engineers, we need Raffy in our lineup! (Also I have no problem with Winc pitching 2 but the idea we needed him to to load manage the bullpen is weird. Totally fine with trying not to overtax our top 3 in Jansen/Martin/Campbell in that game, but I think Slaten and Weisert also looked good in the spring and they literally haven't pitched.) I wonder if this is the year we finally see that multi-inning relief ace role we've always imagined? Justin Masterson was the last one I remember filling that role.

Sounds like the Hoskins slide was legal but I'm on McNeil's side it's dirty. Clearly he's trying to slide hard and make it really tough for McNeil to turn the double play so he's basically going for a slide tackle not trying to reach the base as fast as he can which I don't want legislated out of the game, but if you go in spikes up on or above the ankle it's really dangerous and would be a textbook red card in soccer. Depends on which league you're watching. Hard to tell what's textbook these days.

I love all these posts talking about how the Sox should have just matched/beaten offers that pitchers signed for with other teams that completely ignore context. Just go sign Imanaga! Ignore the fact that he obviously had his heart set on the Cubbies and spent three weeks in Chicago prior to signing there officially. Sign Stroman! Ignore the fact that he lobbied very publically to sign with the Yanks. Sign Paxton! Maybe he wasn't terribly interested in resigning with the Sox and was interested in chasing a ring with the Dodgers.

Watching LLWS on ESPN and saw one Jaxon Kalish draw a walk against Hawaii. Couldn't find anything online but is there any chance he's related to Ryan?

Throwing the term rookie around pretty liberally there, Eric How do you figure? He had made 2 MLB appearances entering this year. He is literally a rookie. It was a joke about the fact that he's 31. Pretty understandable that there's little fanfare with a little context, Chris.

Paxton is a mythical creature not unlike a Hydra in my interpretation. I have real doubts that we ever see him pitch for the Sox(if he even exists). As for Sale, it HAS to be a weird experience for him being healthy and just lousy(at best). He has blown away just about every hitter he’s faced from the time he was about 10 years old. For him to be so vulnerable now must feel very strange. His velo is good and his breaking stuff is moving. I wonder if it's a combination of control and tipping the fastball. He's shown that he still can do it. He's thrown 72 innings since August of 2019, maybe it'll take more than one month for him to put it all together? It isn't fun watching him figure it out right now but I think he deserves more of a leash here.

Based on the reporting I have seen today - nice win by LFC as well - this signing looks like very good value for the money, particularly for a player who just distinguished himself on the world stage and was in demand. Liverpool have several key attacking forward players down with medium to long term injury and this looks like a play to try to blast their way back into the top four and Champions League money. Reminiscent of the love for Luis Diaz in the last January window. Man it's such a shame Diaz has had such a rough go of it this year. He looked like such a great replacement for Mane at the time.

- The redundancy is in what they contribute to the lineup. Swanson's steamer projected OBP is .309. Segura's, e.g., is .331.
- I know people keep bringing up this "you can't plan with prospects in mind" canard, and I think it's one of those things where it's a good rule of thumb, but sometimes you need to break those rules. When you have most of your top position prospects in the two middle infield positions, do you really want your two expensive log-term contracts to be in precisely those two positions? And unlike Correa or Bogaerts, neither Swanson nor Story can really move off of middle infield (while retaining any real value at least). Having one expensive long-term contract there in Story - okay. Having two though...?
- Obviously Swanson is good defensively. Just as obviously, not every good defensive shortstop is worth any contract. Past 6/150, plus the QO cost, I'm just not interested. - Okay, wRC+ then. He's at 107 over the last two seasons, 109 over the last three, 104 over the last four. That's fine; not great. And even if you don't want to say there's a trend there, he'll be 29; it's not likely there's remaining upside, and he's very likely to be below average offensively before the contract is up.
I still don’t get the redundancy argument. The whole point of WAR is that it’s supposed to capture value added in different ways - offense, defense, baserunning, etc. EG in the following scenario: Team A has a 4 WAR 2B (105 wRC, strong defender) and a 4 WAR SS (105 wRC, strong defender). Team B has a 4 WAR 2B (105 wRC, strong defender) and a 4 WAR SS (130 wRC, slightly below average defender). Unless you think WAR undervalues offense and overvalues defense, I don’t see any reason why Team A would be any better or worse off than Team B. I think it's more that should team B have an opportunity to add a plus defensive middle infielder with potential for an impact bat they can move that 130wRC infielder to third, first, left, etc. Both of those 105 wRC lose their value as they move down the defensive spectrum, the 130wRC guy doesn't lose as much. Maybe even gains if he becomes a plus defensive 3b or something.

Ha Seong Kim checks a lot of boxes for me. 27, under control, plus defensive shortstop, seemingly available, upside with the bat.
Have I missed any real discussion about him?
