I wonder if Andrew Miller is a cautionary example of what not to in player developer. Even he had 3 years college, he got just 3 games in A+ before MLB, then bounced between minors and MLB for the next 3 years. Detroit really messed him up, of course they finched Miguel out of it.

ericmvan: what about using the strikeout pitch instead of frequency, is that data available?

I found it interesting that Shields milb-mlb stats are very consistent in era, whip, SO and BB/9. Is Owens FB projected to be average or below? In the 3-4 games I have been to, it does seem that his FB command is below avg in being far out of the strike zone at times, even in situations when he is not ahead of the count trying to get batters to chase. But he does seem to be good at keeping it down. Given that batters seem to have a hard time making good contact on Owens, I would think that he could throw fewer balls daring batters to swing. But I don't know what he is being told to work on, and for a 21 year old to be killing AA, I have high hopes. So while Owens BB/9 is higher than Shields, he gives up fewer hits, so both have good WHIP. SO/9 edge to Owens, SO/BB to Shields. Owens is 20/21 in his A+/AA season, Shields was 22.5 in his A+/AA season (was he injured in 2002? no stats).

if 2 guys can get on in the 7th, any bets on Xander pinch hitting for Lester?

Couch, 2 games of 7 & 9 innings, 1R/ER each outing trumps the no hits in 5in, even though I am normally a big Owens fan.

I wonder if Xander had a chance to arrange for family to come?

Xander cracked top 20 by Jun 2011, when he was still 18, and then stayed there. Given how volatile rankings are for 19 year olds and younger, I don't think this is big deal. On the other hand, hopes were really high for Almanzar in 2008 when he was only 17. I still think he has potential as power bat. There are just not many prospect with natural power that can also hit for avg.

I am glad that Henry is content to pitch at a velocity that he can sustain through the game with deception. The general pattern of the hard throwers seems to be that they get injured and sit out 1 year to recover from surgery. Also, big leaguers can hit straight fast balls. I will be patient is assuming that Owens should gain a small uptick by the time he is 23-25. Even without the extra velocity, and he becomes a 4/5 starter, then that is still draft success. I think his top pitching prospect status is that he is a hair over the other top 5. If our 5 pitching prospects in AA/AAA top out at 3-5 starters, two of them could be packaged for a 2 starter?

Almanzar was once #4, cannot think of another candidate who was once 4, but also as low as 60. I am still lobbying for Workman to be grade/scale 5.

I would not give a huge amount of attention to the fact that Owens is 4th ranked prospect, and top pitcher, with 5 other pitchers below him in the top 10. All are grade 6, with a ceiling of 7. per Prospect Scouting Scale, grade 6 for pitchers could be either a #2 or #3 starter, so since our pitching prospects are cited with a projection of #3 starter, that must mean they are on low end 6? Presumably a #1 starter could be a grade 7 or 8? so there may some inconsistency in the definition and the verbal projection?

well if you don't like ells power, I am sure power bats Pujols and Josh Hamilton could be available this off season.

given the situation, late in game, big lead, Astros are swinging for it, while Britton should be focused on eating innings, so I discount this. Why are we looking so hard for a power bat in LF/1B when there is one in CF?

Workman should be grade 5, not 4 given that he projects, not ceiling, as late inning RP or 4/5 starter.

I don't know if Drake Britton will be a good pitcher, but its clear he is a great athlete, re. 3rd out of 8th inning

Great game by Owens, withstood adversity in the second, strike 3 passed ball and an errant throw by Almanzar to first. Speaking of Almanzar, two years ago he looked awkward, now he seems to have grown into his body. Of the bubble candidates for a 40-man roster spot, I would like keep him. In 2-3 years, he could have very good power and his avg is already good.

My opinion is that WMB is extremely talented, particularly in bat strength as his HRs are still rising on leaving the ball park, such that he was able to be successful through his minor league ascent without ever having to develop a solid plate approach. However, in the hyper-scrutinized world of MLB, any flaw that can be found in a player will be attacked relentlessly. So hopefully Will will solve this before he runs out of options or a 40-man roster spot.

no sarcasm, I would say Ells is worth 14-16M per year, which would temporarily put him over Pedroia, but Pedy had security whereas Ells is at risk of health and performance. I don't have a problem with Bradley, Ells, Vict in the outfield with Nava, Gnomes on the bench. Heck, Nava could learn a few more infield positions as utility too.

for those complaining on Nava's lack of xbh, Nava only got credit for a single, but in a normal situation, that was a double.

I was sitting 2nd row directly behind home plate and did not hear anything, so if Ramos said anything, it was at no more than conversation level, nor did he use any hand gestures, plus he was walking towards the dugout, so it could not have been more than a word or two. Anyways, the trip was to see Owens pitch. His command was off, not the strikeout machine he is at other times. Yet Potomac got no hits off him. There was a pro scout there next to me, I did not hear what team he was scouting for or whom he was scouting - sorry.

Given that we have more eligible grade/scale 4-5 (bench and avg) prospects than we have room for on the 40-man this winter, at some point it would make sense to package several of these for one grade 6+ player - who will probably not be a prospect or cheap current mlb player, ie, it will be someone drawing a big salary or heading to free agency. But it will probably take Doubront and one of the grade 6 prospects to get Lee.

I recall a story about Kurt Rambis (also Santa Clara U?) when he first made the Lakers starting lineup. Pat Riley noticed Rambis circling in his vicinity for several days. Kurt was slow to appreciate that as a starter, he could speak with the coach.

Almanzar made all star on the strength of his bat. Cechinni is not exactly a gold glove defender, just a better bat than Almanzar. Xander would have been all star too if we had not been so eager to promote him to AAA. I guess he will just have to get over it. Maybe a September call up will make up for this.
