Competitive balance picks are so stupid. Yeah, the Cardinals need extra picks. They're clearly struggling to field a competitive team. Since the Pirates and the Brewers have competitive balance picks, they may be interesting assets to discuss as part of a Mike Carp potential trade package. Does anyone know if a team's draft allotment goes up if it acquires a competitive balance pick?

That's amazing news about Bailey. It implies that they feel very good about his rehab, which apparently they have been monitoring closely. Since it's shoulder surgery, I am astonished. $4 mil on a guy they won't even sniff on the field until mid year? After major surgery like that that some guys never fully recover from? Wow. Beyond that, they are committing to $4 mil for him when they are expected to have only a max of $32 mil to spend. That implies that they don't think they are going to need the full $32 mil to achieve their other priorities. Do you guys still think Ellsbury is in the mix? This implies to me no way in hell. I think they are talking about Salty when they say take the deal or we are moving on. My ears pain me to hear them imply this. I think they do not want to lose those picks. At all. I'm still hoping they sign at least one top guy.....Tanaka or Choo. One of those 2 guys make a lot of sense to me. Get both of them if they can trade Peavy or Dempster, unloading some salary. The report is that they will tender Bailey. There may be an agreement on an incentive laden deal. We need to wait on details (if the report is accurate) before guessing the impact.

Joel Sherman ?@joelsherman110s A person I trust said #Redsox will tender contract to Andrew Bailey: Uehara insurance/trade chip/just 1-yr commitment at $4M range twitter.com/Joelsherman1Smart move. There is no one available who would provide better insurance for the price.

Furcal could make sense as the backup infielder if he were willing to accept such a role. There is no indication that he has anything left offensively or defensively. John McDonald will at least provide defense.

Has anyone seen reports on how much the Red Sox offered? I would have thought they would offer up to Dempster money? Then they would have been better able to guide the trade market for pitchers.

JMEI raises a good point on roster construction. If Mark Trumbo is available, he would provide the power that would be the upside of abreu, greater position flexibility, and the salary to allow the team to resign napoli to a one or two year contract. Since the angels are looking to compete now a lackey and morales package might be a good base.

One significant factor is if he will receive a qualifying offer. For the reasons, you cited he is not a type of player that you would lose a 1st round pick.

A contract equivalent to a middle reliever for MAG. It would be interesting to get a detailed medical report on his shoulder.

Adam Laroche would be an intriguing trade target who could be had for reasonable package.

Is it a risk? Yes, but a limited one for most likely the only difference maker to be available? It is a smaller risk with a higher first year payoff then signing MAG.

Lincecum as an August pickup to be the super reliever role which he performed last postseason could be a great pickup. Teammates love him so he would fit in the locker room. The prospect cost would be manageable. I would trade Shaw and Vinicio for him. He would get through waivers with that contract.

Juan Nieves probably has a greater understanding of what he can do than most. Plus, the trade removes no significant trading chips to make a larger trade. All in all another intelligent move in a great year for front office.
The only part I do not understand was why get cash back rather than the international slot.

Congratulations to Chris Mears, the area scout for Oklahoma. He must have helped the Red Sox get a good read on Denney.
