I do not know what it would take to get Hamels, nor do I know if it is worthwhile. I do believe that the Cards trade yesterday took one less option away from the Phillies. It may leave the Cubs, Red Sox, and Dodgers as the most viable to take on the contract and trade viable prospects. Like with Heyward, the cost may be less than we anticipate.

In the past Cherongton seems to have operated with both free agency and trades very quietly, It seems like there are daily reports of the free agents that the Red Sox are chasing. Is there a change this offseason or is there more intentional misdirection?

A Gee/Murphy trade for Victorino would be the type of value trade that Cherington would seem to love. It also may not preclude a trade with the Reds.

The other feasible option for the Braves is to use Heyward in a trade for a starter such as Cueto or Ross. If Heyward is going to the Red Sox the cost in players will probably be higher than you project.

I think that I inadvertently sidetracked the conversation when I mentioned Taveras. My main point was that the Red Sox will need to include a top prospect or young player to trade for Donaldson. A package of lesser prospects will not do it in my opinion. I think Donaldson would fit well at 3B for the Cards (similar to when the Cards got Rolen) with Carpenter moving to 2B or 1B. I think the Cards would be willing to include Taveras or other highly rated young player to make it happen.

Donaldson is an interesting prospect because the A's could move him without the community revolting (unlike a Stanton). However, there are teams like the Cardinals (Tavares), Pirates (Polanco), or Dodgers (Pederson).who need an upgrade at 3b and have top prospects to make a trade. I do not believe your package of quantity would beat their quality.

While I like zobrist, the Rays have a 2015 option on him for a shade more than 7.5 million. I would be surprised if they do not exercise. I also do not view him as 3B. His splits as a LH hitter would look great for the Red Sox on a short term contract starting 2016 (when he will be 34).

I think Hunter Pence money 5/90 is a fair amount to resign Cespedes. If he would extend for that, I would plug in LF and look to upgrade elsewhere.

Jmei, I would think the better comparison is potential Free Agent pitcher signed. (and the cost to do so) vs Latos or Leake (and the coat of Cespedes).

In Sunday's column, Cafardo wrote "Don’t forget, the Red Sox have a player to be named coming from the Cubs for Felix Doubront, who made an impressive first start for Chicago. Could be a decent prospect." We will have to see what decent means, and what he means "could be." Does this suggest that the list of players to draw from changes with team or Doubront performance.

I think Bradley is getting written off too quickly for next year. He may not start the year with the team, but it doesn't mean that he will not be a consideration by the all star game. Also, why is the general assumption that Cespedes will not sign an extension. Has he stated something that suggests that?

In his article today, Cafardo suggested that Masterson and Grilli will be on next year's team. While both could be signed to"pillow"contracts, who sees them as upgrades for the team next year?

Agree. The Red Sox have been looking for a young power hitting outfielder for awhile. Cespedes has fit in well. Posters have argued that Cespedes will be difficult to resign. Latos may be difficult to sign before free agency as well. I believe that it would only make sense to trade him for a pitcher that can be a 1 or a 2 , and is signed for multiple years at a reasonable salary. In other words, I do not believe Cespedes will be going anywhere this offseason.

One advantage that Betts has is that with his position flexibility, he can still get regular ABs even if the Red Sox signs Castillo. If Castillo does sign with the Red Sox, he and JBJ may be teammates for a couple of weeks prior to the end of the minor league season.

I do not find the range reported by Gammons to be particularly helpful. However, the points regarding human trafficking and calcium are very insightful.

Should the Red Sox pursue Masterson this offseason? What would be the price tag? We know the Cardinals can not offer a qualifying offer and are unlikely to seek to resign him with the quantity of pitchers they have.

With the pressure Philadelphia is under to make a trade, Phillies ownership may take over negotiations in August.

Who do see the Red Sox trading in August? Do you see the Red Sox in buyer's mode in August to set up for 2015?

Cespedes is 3.0 WAR outfielder with an extra season of control + a pick for a 3.0 WAR pitcher with an excellent postseason record and an outfielder with a negative WAR. That sounds like a quality trade for both sides.

What are the chances that Victorino is attached to one of the trades? While I like him, I am not sure if he has a clear role on next year's team.

Quality return for Peavy. If the Red Sox trades Lester, then hopefully Hamels is coming soon.

I would trade Lester or Lackey or Peavy whoever we can trade for fair value. I would not trade more than 1 as the pressure on the young pitchers may become too great and that could stunt their development.
