If the Red Sox grow tired of waiting for Boras, how about Nelson Cruz for Rick Porcello? To fill Porcello's spot, the Red Sox could sign Yu Darvish. If he were tipping his pitches in the World Series, Cora may know how to fix the issue.

Should the Red Sox sign a depth starter in case Wright is suspended to start the year? If so, who would be good candidates?

Red Sox liked Carlos Santana's combination of on-base skills, pop and leadership qualities. They just didn't value the package as much as the Phillies, who can point to Santana as a winning player in future attempts to lure veterans as part of their rebuild. Santana isn't a true middle-of-the-order thumper, but Sox hopeful his signing helps spur movement in the markets for J.D. Martinez and Eric Hosmer.

I am beginning to believe that JDM and Hosmer is possible. I think JDM is going to sign a contract similar to max scherzer with payments that is spread over twice as long as the length of the contract so the contract amount looks bloated. I think Hosmer’s may be front loaded of similar length to JDM with an opt out after 3 years with the understanding that Hosmer will opt out. That way Boras looks like he was not overpromising JDM and Hosmer but the actual bite will be much less. My guess for JDM is $180 million for 6 years.

How much less guaranteed money would make it sensible for the Red Sox to go after Hosmer than JDM?

I wonder if the Stanton trade actually takes the pressure off DD to sign JD Martinez. He could make a good argument that the team should remain built on pitching, defense, and athleticism to sign a more all around hitter like Hosmer (who should find the Red Sox more appealing than the Padres) or Santana and put money into relievers and maybe another starter.

Stanton’s rejection of Giants and Cardinals bad news for Red Sox on several fronts. The price of the free agents increased. Hopefully, Stanton stays in National League.

The more extended comment from Bradford Doolittle in a conversation with David Schoenfield was "You could argue that the White Sox might want to further populate their stash of corner infield prospects if Abreu is dealt, but that depends on how they evaluate the relative potential of Groome and Chavis. Groome and a lower-level prospect -- let's say 2017 draftee Brett Netzer -- gets it done." Both agreed that the White Sox would not have interest in JBJ because the White Sox have Luis Robert and Blake Rutherford as long-term possibilities at center field.

Would someone be able to outline what perks are allowed in a minor league contract?
Will Ohtani be able to receive airplane tickets/hotel rooms for his family to fly over?
Will Ohtani be able to receive paid lodging?
Depending on the perks allowed, the value could be greater than the signing bonus.

I have long respected Santana as a leader and player. At a 3 year/$45 million deal he would be a steal. However, there is a constant mention in the press that Hosmer is overvalued and Santana is undervalued. At what point,’ will Hosmer’s price drop and Santana’s increases to change the value proposition?

The Marlins appear to be looking for pitching prospects. Would you do Groome straight up for Stanton with the Marlins contributing $30 million?

I can understand the marketing angle. Ortiz proved what was possible. However, when was the last time thought about the greater good of baseball as much as or more than their player's interests?

Based on the posts (including my previous posts), we have written about what will DD do? What role will Cora’s preferences and experience play in roster construction? The Astros team has a tough minded and offensively skilled group with average to poor defensive metrics. Will Cora push DD to add similar players to the Red Sox? Will he want a veteran utility player similar to himself on the team? Will he want a leader in the mold of Beltran on the team?

Interesting note from MLB Rumors: "Astute readers will note that MLBTR has now adopted a new spelling. Previously, for a variety of reasons, we utilized the anglicization “Otani.” We have now confirmed, however, that the spelling “Ohtani” is the formal spelling likely to be utilized in his potential transition to the majors."

The issue is not Boras. Boras can ask for moon but the problem is that the owners usually cave to him. Signing the top free agents is an inefficient way to build a team. The death of Flores was not only deeply saddening, but removed, one of the best chips to make a Stanton trade. Looking for value on the trade front and waiting to for some mid level, free agents to be better value may be the wisest course.

If I could have my wish of pitching coaches then it would be Rick Honeycutt. He has the ability to revive a pitcher's career such as with Marrow or make tweaks such as he did with Darvish (until Darvish folded under the pressure of the World Series). Honeycutt idoes not a contract with the Dodgers for next year.

To pay JD Martinez, $20-$25 million with the thought that he would be just as effective in a new position is not a reasonable bet.
Plus, that is a huge sum to pay a player who has been an all star only 1 time
It is also a bad omen to bring someone in for power who has never homered at Fenway (realizing that he has played only 7 games at Fenway).
I would skip him as an option and either get Stanton or spread the money to bring in quality players (like Santana) who will also help provide leadership in the clubhouse.

The question about JD Martinez is will he perform well in a big market. A trade with the Marlins still makes more sense.
