Cora's going to use the bench, and I like that. It's such a long season, and even young guys can wear down, as Bogaerts has proven over the years.
But another reason he's using the bench is that the bench guys are actually pretty good. Mitch Moreland has been a regular most of his career. If Brock Holt is truly recovered, he can play. Blake Swihart is very talented. Sandy Leon is not a great hitter, but he's very good defensively, is not awful at the plate and will occasionally run into one.
We'll see what the bench looks like as the season goes on and guys get hurt, but it's easier to play the reserves when they're not guys like Josh Rutledge, Aaron Hill, the washed-up versions of Grady Sizemore and Allen Craig and Jonathan Herrera.

And Thompson could be the sleeper.

Is Jerez hurt? He hasn't pitched, right? Tons of non-roster guys have gotten into games. Seems odd that there's no Jerez.

I guess it depends on your definition of nice player. Five pennies aren't going to get the Red Sox a nickel. The Twins took a shiny penny and got a $100 bill back in Odorizzi. A 21-year-old shortstop and a 29-year-old corner infielder are a useful comparison?

I would love to see Mike Shawaryn show at Portland that he could be a viable starter instead of another bullpen arm. He had couple of bad starts at Greenville and Salem last year inflating his ERA, but his strikeout numbers were impressive, and he was seen as a first-round talent before injuries set him back as a junior at Maryland.
And obviously the Sox need to see C.J. Chatham actually be able to stay on the field to see what he actually might be.

As soon as that 280 40hr gold glove shortstop that some people said Xander was going to be shows up the roster will be much better. People (including me) did have higher hopes for him than what he's shown so far, but I don't think anyone was predicting him to be a 40-homer player -- especially before home runs spiked last year -- or a Gold Glove winner.

"Boras also represents free-agent first baseman Eric Hosmer, who might be the best all-around player on the market. Asked recently to choose between Stanton, Martinez and Hosmer, three talent evaluators said they preferred Hosmer based on his durability, superb defense and reputation as a winner and clubhouse leader." Hmmm, this seems to run contrary to most opinions on here, thoughts. Agents talk up their clients. Scott Boras is great at that, to the point of making ludicrous claims sometimes, like when he said Deven Marrero will be a much better player in the majors than he was in the minors because he's a guy who shines when the spotlight is on.

October 11, 1970: Tony Conigliaro traded by the Boston Red Sox with Ray Jarvis and Jerry Moses to the California Angels for Doug Griffin, Jarvis Tatum and Ken Tatum. January 23, 1981: Fred Lynn traded by the Boston Red Sox with Steve Renko to the California Angels for Jim Dorsey, Joe Rudi and Frank Tanana. July 31, 2004: Nomar Garciaparra traded as part of a 4-team trade by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Murton to the Chicago Cubs. Also: June 8, 1976: Bobby Orr signs with the Black Hawks Yep. All of them were the right move, and all must've been torture to do. They were the right move, except for Lynn. That was just Heywood and Buddy being cheap. Rudi was over the hill, Dorsey was nothing, and Tanana hadn't yet mastered how to be a junkballer. Lynn was still in his prime and had another eight good years ahead of him, good years that would have been great years if he had kept playing in Fenway.

There you go Farrell. Couldn't go without the Barnes appearance, huh? But he's become Andrew Miller, haven't you heard?

It's nice to see Ockimey finishing strong in Portland. It will give him something to build on.

It's not the home-road splits for Barnes that are the most troubling, it's these (not including tonight):
High-leverage: 83 PA, .273/.390/.364/754, 14BB, 20K
Medium-leverage: 70 PA, .172/.243/.313/555, 6 BB, 22 K
Low-leverage: 90 PA, .181/.244/.293/.497, 6BB, 24K.
High-leverage: 83 PA, 11 BB; medium/low-leverage: 160 PA, 12BB

The Yankees still gave up a bunch of good prospects. They gave up 2 injury question marks and a good prospect you meant to say? They gave up an injury question mark (Kaprelian), a HUGE injury question mark (Fowler) and a talented guy with BIG makeup concerns. There's a chance the A's get nothing out of this.

Barnes has been solid for his last 12 appearance. But 12 appearances does not make him Andrew Miller.

Really figured one of the them would be a Rule 5 eligible guy. Anderson has a chance to make it, but glad Mata and Shawaryn weren't traded.
Of course one of them could go for a reliever.

Sorry, as much as I hate the Yanks...Cashman is way too shrewd of a GM to make this move just to block us. It's not beneath the Yankees to make moves based off the Sox interest in the same exact player. Johnny Damon, Mark Texeira, Jose Contreras, the list goes on and on. Nor the other way around: Pedro Martinez, Daisuke Matsuzaka. To steal from "The Godfather," it's business, not personal.

Yeah, the "Dombrowski trades everybody" scenario neglects that he DIDN'T trade Benintendi and refused to trade Devers.
He said he told his people to restock the system this year, and it looks like they've done a good job, with Flores, Diaz, Scherff, Brannen and Houck.
Of course, signing Otani would be a nice way to make sure most of those guys hang around. :-)

Even counting the chest protector he's skinnier than Sandoval.

Dombrowski was smart enough to hold on to Benintendi.

Yeah Chavis. What I'm afraid of is DD panicking. Trading some very good minor leaguers for some stop gap 3rd baseman. I know Pablo has a huge contract. Whose fault is that? Instead of admitting their mistake, they keep him around and hope he gets better. That's not happening. If he's untradeable, just dump him for the sake of the team. Say you're sorry. It just didn't work out and move on. What would Belichick do? By the way, Devers now has an OPS of .947. He needs more seasoning. Yeah, right. You know it's not Dombrowski's, right?

The plus here is that it's pretty much take it or leave it. Holding out changes nothing. I wonder if the Sox are confident he will "take it" because of his age. Maybe they figure he won't want to risk going back in the draft when he's almost 24 and will have zero leverage.
