There's some cash savings with Sterry -- and they can dream on the long, long, longshot of him becoming the next Matt Stairs.

Back to back years the Sox pick a guy from IMG after Groome last year. Three years in a row. Logan Allen in 2015.

2012 looks bad, but maybe Johnson and/or one of the righty relievers can salvage something from it. 2013 was godawful, but 2014 COULD wind up being a really good draft. Kopech has already had real value, bringing back Sale, and Travis has made the majors, and should be there for good starting next year. Chavis is blasting his way back onto the prospect map, Ockimey and Kemp are a long way away but have a shot to make it, and Jalen Beeks, even if he is just a reliever at the major-league level, could be a great sleeper pick. Well, let's be clear here: If we're going to talk about the GM and the draft, you're talking about the first round, maybe second. The GM isn't going to have granular input into, say, the fifth-round pick at any significant level. You're talking the scouting director at that point. Fair enough, but let's hope the third baseman Cherington is remembered for is Chavis, not Sandoval. :-)

Definitely NOT the assistant for the Blue Jays. The Cherington drafts were a disaster (until Benintendi came along at least). 2012 looks bad, but maybe Johnson and/or one of the righty relievers can salvage something from it. 2013 was godawful, but 2014 COULD wind up being a really good draft. Kopech - Value is through the roof... based on 3-4 inning stints in the AFL against tired hitters, off-field issues I think the numbers at Salem (where he was age-advanced) and the radar-gun readings did as much or more for his value.

Have you heard anything on whether Acosta will play or not?

Congrats to DD for finally acquiring his first non-major league player in a trade while with the Red Sox. Isn't Luis Ysla a DD trade?

When Bard came up and didn't have command his first few outings and got hit hard, everyone, I mean, everyone, said his FB was "flat" and "had no life" when in fact pitch/fx showed it to have exceptional movement. It wasn't too much later that he went on a stretch where he fanned half the batters he faced without walking anybody. I hope I get some sort of prize for the 100th time I say this on these boards. I don't remember anyone, much less everyone, saying that about Bard. And as for him getting hit hard in his first few outings, Bard's first 10 games in the majors: 12 IP, 8H, 1ER, 4 BB, 13K. By the time he finally had a rough outing in his 11th appearance, I think most people saw he could pitch in the majors.

I personally can't conceive a scenario where DD believes that having Shaw/Sandoval/Holt/Hernandez for 1B/DH & 3B is good enough to start the year (aside from Moncada looking amazing this offseason and winning the 3B job by spring training). Did Hanley Ramirez retire?

THAT'S the Kimbrel they traded for.

He takes a lot of heat on the board for the times when he struggles and he takes heat for the guys they gave up for him, but Craig Kimbrel gets some sincere props from at lease one person on Sox prospects tonight for coming back so quick from knee surgery.

Not when I think of John Lackey for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly. Those trades reeked of being edicts from above. Maybe you're right, but it also seems that Larry Lucchino was an all-purpose boogeyman for a bad move made while he was still with the team.

This is getting to be like Lou Gorman again when rumors flew of a washed up Sid Fernandez for a young Mo Vaughn. Dombroski is not quite as idiotic, but anyone pining for Ben again? Not when I think of John Lackey for Allen Craig and Joe Kelly.

He also gave them a very good effort in Game 6 against the Tigers: 5 shutout innings before leaving with two on to start the sixth -- runners that scored after Franklin Morales relieved him. Everyone remembers Victorino's grand slam but not as many remember Clay's start helped them stay close.

After the Sox drafted Chatham, a few people said they were curious what kind of bonus Nolan Jones would get. He got $2.25 million, more than a million over slot. linkSo there was no way the Sox were every signing Groome and Jones.

How does a 6'4" 185 pound guy not project to possibly grow into a little bit more power? Some guys just don't have it. Ryan Sweeney was 6-4, 225 and and 584 major league hits, but just 23 homers in 2,118 at-bats.

As long as it is not public, I don't think we want to be breaking this kind of news (or speculating about it) on a public message board. It was significant enough to drop him to 12 but not significant enough to drop him past 12. He'll come in with a clean sheet, although it will be interesting to see if there is a recoupment clause in his pro contract, if and when he signs. Fair enough. Hope he's just a dumb 17-year-old who will grow wiser -- like a lot of 17-year-olds do.

I like Dunn and think he'd be a good pick, but I hope him being local plays no role in the Sox decision.

Hope: Showing last year's struggles were due to injury, the out-of-options Edwin Escobar is healthy, earns a spot and pitches effectively.
Fear: Junichi Tazawa's struggles at the end of last season weren't because he's tired, but because he's cooked.

Hochevar had already had a year as a dominant reliever first.

Another prospect I wasted time on learning how to pronounce and spell their name. My new policy will be, If I can't spell it or pronounce it, it's nickname city. Some on staff hate that , so delete away. This is the best grumpy old man post ever. It's amazing how many people on this board and SOSH can't spell Sonny Gray correctly.

I bet one could find some Cecchini posts here that look mighty embarrassing in retrospect This got me curious and I took a quick look at the old Cecchini thread. This one's good: ...this one's fun: ...but this one's my favorite: Probably the dumbest thing written here is that Bradley's defense is better than it looks.
