You mean THAT Chris Davis, with 30 home runs so far with a month and a half to go? Nah, where would we play him? We'd probably get the 2014 version. .....or, maybe the 2013 version, or the 2012 version?

There are some horrible rumors out there to the effect that the Red Sox will make a run at Chris Davis this offseason. You mean THAT Chris Davis, with 30 home runs so far with a month and a half to go? Nah, where would we play him?

The thought of Panda throwing across the diamond to Hanley will, no doubt, give me some sleepless nights this winter.

Buchholz has a reasonable option and, if healthy (big IF), has the talent to remain in the top of the rotation. I wouldn't be opposed, however, to acquiring Cueto as a free agent providing the years are not excessive; let's say five. There's no QO to worry about as it was this past offseason when the Sox lost a high second and third pick by signing Ramirez and Pablo. Rodriguez is an automatic. The rest of the rotation should be left up to a competition. I thought that Wright would continue to be inconsistent, but his last two starts have me warming up to him. It's just so frustrating, though, when he doesn't have complete control of his knuckled, to keep watching passed balls and wild pitches.
Kelly is an enigma and I'm losing patience with him. He has to earn his spot whether in the rotation or the pen. Miley is ok as a #4 or #5.
BTW Alex Speier has an excellent analysis in the Globe yesterday of the entire pitching staff, citing contracts and future prospects. It falls under the headline " Bullpen needs an overhaul".

Glorious start to Austin Glorius professional career: 1 IP, 0H, 1BB, 3Ks. Someone had to say it.

What exactly is an "obedient" curveball? One that does what he's told to do!

Henry gets my nod with31.2 IP, a third more than the closest competitor. His K/BB numbers were impressive also for the month.

Could be an off-season acquisition. It appears the team is going to focus on young pitchers for most of the remaining season. This way it can evaluate whom it wants on the 2016 roster and whom it will make available to trade.

Who gets the call to pitch on Tuesday vs. MFYs? My guess is Johnson. Doubt they call him up yet as they could use the spot to activate Cook.

you forget about Beeks in Greenville I was going to mention him, too. Got his ninth win last night. Thanks for your input; much appreciated. Must be a fun job this year what with all the talent at Greenville.

Now is the time to start DFA'ing those bad FA contracts (Napoli, Masterson) that end after the season since it's become apparent that no other team is willing to give up the lowest of anything, or take on a dime of the remaining cash left. Season is lost, lest some people from the minors play and see how they do (Shaw perhaps), or maybe pick up someone who has better talent via DFA from someone else (Worley), or call up Hembree. Why rush? Place those guys on waivers in August. Who knows, a contending team may suffer an injury and could plug in a Napoli, deAza, Masterson, Breslow to help out short term. At least the Sox would get something, a low minors prospect for example.

Rob Bradford @bradfo 3m3 minutes ago Per source it doesn't appear Padres have interest in exploring deal involving Sandoval Only if the Pads include Middlebrooks!

In all honesty, I feel like you on the bolded, man. Add to that the fact that I've lost my trust in the ability of this Front Office to make the right changes, and in the Manager, I think this is the most down and frustrated I've been with the Sox since the John Henry era started. Where we differ is I don't think trading all the top prospects you have is really a sustainable proposition. As Jimed said above, you want perceived value, you have to do a 3 for 1 or 4 for 1 with your top prospects, like San Diego did or Toronto is doing. And Toronto is close enough that it makes sense for them to do this. The Red Sox are nowhere close to that. And you still run the risk that whoever you get back becomes terrible in Boston for some inexplicable reason. I think this team tied itself up with last season's moves. They're screwed with older players making tons of money and not delivering, guys playing at positions that are not theirs, a bad manager, terrible major league level evaluation, etc. It's mindboggling. Frankly, I think I'm ready for a rebuild. Toronto, New York and Baltimore are likely to beat us up for a while. Sell off what you can, be patient, play the kids, build for 2017-2018. I totally agree with your last paragraph. Only problem is, the fans are impatient and want a winner now. And, Lucchino and Co. listen to these frustrated people and try to make moves for immediate satisfaction. Patience is not a virtue in the Nation.

Would the padres have any interest in Sadoval??? They were suposably in on him last winter. With a limited NTC, I'm sure he would exercise it. Why uproot your family after just settling in? And that 17m salary for the next four years, well a team would have to be really desperate.

I'd rather surrender Marrero than Guerra right now. Though Guerra has a higher ceiling, Marrero is more ML ready, which should appeal to the Padres or another team with a SS need. Marrero doesn't fit with the Sox right now. And Guerra, who's a few years away, may find a different landscape when he's ready.

Sad to see Nava DFA'd, but he hasn't made any contributions to the team this year, though injuries, no doubt, played a part. He was a good story, from the Chico Outlaws to the big leagues, and played a vital role on the team in his early years. Hopefully he can latch on somewhere and get to play more regularly thus, having a good career.
It's clear the Sox are focusing on its young outfielders to see what they have for the balance of the season and going forward.

I believe in redemption. If Jon shakes his demons, reforms his attitude, works hard and begs for forgiveness, why not give him another chance? Being on top of the heap, then losing it all because of bad habits can sometimes be a motivator.
I'm not holding my breath on his return, but it's not like we can't use a talented catcher.

Any thoughts on trading Miley?? I still think he is a decent 4/5 going forward but he may also have some value. It would allow the Sox to try out some of the young guys for the rest of the season, and clear a little space for Zimmerman/Price/Cueto. With Bucchholz essentially done for the year, Masterson already in the pen, Kelly most likely headed in the same direction, there's space for the young guys. Plus with the younger pitchers (Rodriguez, Johnson, Owens) likely up against inning restrictions, it seems like the Sox probably need to add pitching (whether its a frontline starter, or more realistically just an innings eater) just to get through the season. Buchholz done for the year? Did I miss something? I thought his ulnar was not torn but sprained and he received a platelet injection. Last I heard it looked like a couple of weeks.

Alex Speier @alexspeier 2m2 minutes ago Sources: Victorino has about $4.9M left in salary on 3-year, $39M deal; Red Sox will pay about $3.8M, with the Angels responsible for $1.1M. This report contradicts Baseball America's quote of Alex Speir wherein he states that the Sox are only picking up $1.1 million of Shane's remaining salary. I assume BA just misread Alex's tweet.

Napoli has been connected in trade rumors with Pittsburgh. Unless the Pirates plan to platoon Alvarez at 1B, I don't see how Napoli helps the Bucs. At any rate, it looks like a low level prospect heading this way.

Citing the most lopsided trade in recent history does much less to bolster your point than you think it does. For one the most lopsided trade in recent memory was the Andrew Miller trade, without question. The best player in the Donaldson trade was a 19 year old SS, and we won't know how good he will be for years. That trade 100% bolsters by point. Oakland doesn't want/need to win the trade in the publics eyes. They do what they think is best long term, even if people think its a bad trade. If 5 years from now Franklin Barreto is a top 5 SS, teams/people will look back and think wow that was a good trade for Oakland.
You've made some good points. Moneyball Billy has made some questionable trades over his career, the most recent being Donaldson trade and acquisition of Samardzija from the Cubs. Who knows, if he's tempted by the prospect package BC can offer, Gray could be moved. And it wouldn't surprise me.

Do you mean Manuel Margot? He's an OF. Not a strong 3B FA class; Freese, Sean Rodriguez, Gordon Beckham among others.

The Sox have a relationship with the Nexen Heros, Park's team. That may be helpful in getting him posted and, ultimately signed.

Though he may be a year or so away, would love to pry Josh Bell away from the Pirates. Don't know what it would take at the deadline as Buch is no longer viable. Pit seems well armed in the BP, so Koji wouldn't interest them.
