Four pitch mix with control spells starter to me. Relievers normally have one or two pitches they do well, though for an inning or two, otherwise second time around they're vulnerable.
My hope is that Farrell slots Brian into the rotation for a couple of starts until we have either a Buchhotz return to health or a determination that he will be out longer than expected.

At some point in the next couple of years one of the Sox minor league teams might have a middle infield of De La Guerra and Guerra. You might say the Sox would go to war with that duo. The Sox look well stocked at the SS position with Marco Hernandez, Dubon, Lin and Guerrra for the future. With X-man a fixture for a long time at the position, the team will have lots of options available.

Don't we already have a trade deadline discussion thread in the Trade Forum?

So, Napoli is being given an opportunity to start even against a tough RH. Last chance?

Neftali Feliz is available as a FA after declining his designation.

1) They're not legal, but there's lots of "not legal" stuff that gets accepted as gamesmanship in sports. 2) The point as I understand it is to get a grip on the ball, not to improve the pitch effectiveness (although I guess you could say it does by giving the pitcher better control). I'm sure if hitters wanted to make a stink, they could, but they don't. I remember at one point this came up and I think Farrell said that if the alternative is the pitcher not being able to control a 99 mph fastball as well, the batter is going to be ok with the pitcher not drilling them with said fastball. (Not in those words, but that was the gist.) 3) Are there really a lot of people "whining" about pitching being dominant? News to me. I agree with you. They should really just fix the balls so they aren't slippery. It shouldn't be that hard. It used to be the umpires' responsibility to rub up the balls with a special mud from the Mississippi River or somewhere. It's probably beneath them now. But I'm sure there is an employee whose job it is to take the shine off the balls before the game starts.

Neftali Feliz is available as he has elected free agency after being designated by the Rangers. Though he doesn't throw in the upper nineties as he used to when he was one of the best closers in the League, he's still its 93 on a consistent basis and is still young. Other teams, no doubt will be bidding for his services.

Three for five last night on top of a 3 for 5 the night before giving him a nine game hitting streak. Now up to .323, he's sure to advance in the next SP rankings.
Hernandez, Lin and Guerra give a bright outlook at SS at least in the short term.

Kind of agree with what Jerry is saying. Not sure how that delivery is legal. He requested and got permission from the league during ST. It's a lot like Waldon's agreed, but a tad different and now can see why he is the nasty guy he is now. Think Bard threw hard throwing 98mph and up? How about Capps throwing nothing under 98 with that hoppity skip? And, at the point of release, he is a couple of feet closer to home plate that a normal delivery. Reminds me of a cricket pitcher.

We also don't really have a no. 2 starter What a curse, stuck with two #1 starters and no #2. And we have a #3 starter but they keep sending him down to Pawtucket without actually starting a game for Boston... That #3 starter just got lit up for 5 ER on 8 H in a six inning stint vs. Lehigh Valley. Just saying'.

Buchholz could be a key guy in the rotation going forward considering his recent success. He can be dominating. A real dilemma for Cherington at the deadline if the team is 4 -7 games out. As has been pointed out, he can be inconsistent and injury prone.
I would tend to hold onto him if he continues his performance to end of July. But, if someone blows our GM away, by all means, pull the trigger, contending or not.

While Cherington may not be able to replace him immediately, there are multiple SP options in the off season including free agents. And, the point in moving Buchholz, is that the team will have basically given up the season.

I'm starting to think we're not going to want to give Napoli a QO. ZiPS/Steamer project him around 1 WAR the rest of the war, so a bit under 2 WAR prorated to an entire season. Throw in a bit more age-related decline and you could be looking at about a 1.5 WAR projection for next year. Ideally you would want a 2 WAR projection to hand out a QO. Giving it to a 1.5 WAR player is possible, but you have to think he'll accept. That's not terrible in a vacuum, fits with the Sox philosophy of "overpay a bit for less years", but might not be a great fit unless they find a way to get rid of one of their two DHs. So, better to avoid that headache by trading Napoli. The Pirates seem like an ideal trade partner in that Napoli would be a clear upgrade for them, they have very good playoff chances, and they are on a tight budget so will appreciate our willingness to cover Napoli's salary. All we want in return is another Brock Holt... .....or Mark Melancon.

I'd like to hope that one of Aro, Light and Barnes can become a dominant late inning reliever. Maybe two!

The Sox want to keep Papi in the organization post playing career. His name carries a lot of weight, a la Pedro, in Latin baseball venues. But, by playing Hanley more at DH, it reduces Papi's PAs to the point where he wouldn't have enough to qualify for an extension. Pedro didn't finish his career with the Red Sox. Continuing to pick up Ortiz's options hurts this team down the road. I wish the Red Sox would take a page from the Patriots and learn to get rid of a guy early than late. I'm all for bringing back Ortiz when his career is over but we shouldn't need to kiss his *** to keep him happy. My point is not in comparing careers or contract status. Rather by "a la Pedro" I wanted to point out that Papi has the same cache as Pedro that the Sox can use to their advantage once Papi's career is over. If, by limiting his PAs to less than 425, he would not qualify for the automatic renewal of his contract even if he were to pass his physical. It would be difficult to do barring injury.

If I am the Sox one way I would try to force Ortiz to waive his 10/5 rights would be to play Hanley at DH more than him. The Sox want to keep Papi in the organization post playing career. Trades need to be made. As I stated before, if you "CAN GET" value, (some straight up salary dumps), for say Miley, CBuc, Koji, maybe somebody takes Craig with another piece, Dodgers owed money is off the books at 4 million, Ortiz? well who knows but you can get down to I believe 90 million. I believe if the Sox want they can get to that amount. With Ortiz your at 101, that also includes at least 1mill for 7 or 8 Arb players.. I said it once, I'll say it again, Sandoval has value, his post season numbers prove it, now there would only be a few suitors, but I believe a deal could be had. After last nights phone debacle, he goes and he goes tomorrow. If Im Cherington, Im on the phone with SD involving CBuc in a sell mode or perhaps Upton Kimbrell in a buy mode since Padres sold the farm to win it this year, or perhaps they have a fire sale due to already dumping the Manager. Upton? well. Now Kimbrell different story under team control. Cherington strikes me as no dummy. He is a Duquette disciple where DD's motto was sign 3 players at 18 mill instead of one at 18. Exactly what you had in 13 after the AGone trade. That is why I believe Ownership has a little to much say in Player Personnel. Ben makes a great deal for EROD, yet stumbles with Lackey for Craig? 2 FA bust at the moment in Panda HRam. I don't see Ben being that stupid, I just don't. Luchinno, Henry involved? I believe NESN has a big say in what and who is traded for or spent. Since this is the trade forum, why don't you give us some realistic and fair trades to mull over? Well, the Trade Subforum does carry the caption "Go nuts...." Guess he's taking advantage of it.

Its a shame that the Red Sox can't speed up the process of screening and physicals so that the draftees names can be released to the public faster as signed. It seems other teams get the information out more quickly.

We may have widely different opinions on many things but there definitely is strong support on this site for getting Hanley out of LF as much as possible and bringing up JBJ. I wonder how long it is going to take for Sox management to do it. -- Breslow reactivated and Shaw sent back to Pawtucket. Definitely not something that will do much for the team. I don't understand them keeping Bianci. I would have liked Shaw to get some chances at both 1st and 3rd. There have been good reports coming from Pawtucket about his fielding at both positions, and he has been mashing at the plate. Jeff Bianchi DFA. Guess they read this site.
