About a week ago, there was talk of Girardi being named Manager of the Year. Today the NY papers are calling him a dumb***. Funny how that works. Did Farrell really out manage the "great" Girardi? Is our guy better than their guy? Or is it better to be lucky than good? Winning makes a manager look good and losing makes a manager look bad. They get too much credit and too much blame. Anybody who spends any time on this board realizes this.

I'm curious what people think it would take to pry Gray away from the Rockies, and the wisdom of such a move. Gray strikes me as a breakout waiting to happen, especially as a FB-SL-CB-CH guy whose breaking stuff would improve away from Coors. He looks like a future 1, or at least a 1a/2, to me, and he still has plenty of control left without yet breaking out (similar to Scherzer prior to the Tigers-DBacks trade). Is there a viable trade without creating a big hole at the MLB level? Would Pomeranz be a sufficient deal-starter, and if so, who's the second (and third) piece? Sure, if Benintendi is the 2nd piece I'd consider Pomeranz as a deal-starter, but I'm not agreeing on Pomeranz as the centerpiece of any trade, especially given his performance in Boston and his elbow injury risk. If I'm Colorado, I'm not trading Gray unless I'm overwhelmed (think Kimbrel trade overwhelmed). If you offer me Kopech and Benintendi, I'd consider it, but I might still say no. Why would they trade Gray for anything less than a sure thing?

DeGrom shut down for season. Carrasco exits after two pitches, after being struck by a line drive. His season is over (fracture). Tough luck for Francona now entering the playoffs without Salazar and CC. Range for this injury is 2-8 weeks, with 4-6 being typical. Obviously, with ALDS starting in less than three weeks (Oct 6), he's almost certainly out for the ALDS. After that, it's possible that he could return for the ALCS, depending on the severity of the fracture and its healing rate. BTW, Salazar may be ready for the ALDS, but likely won't be stretched out enough to start.

Simply unhittable when his control is on.

Just popped into my head, everyone tell me if I'm crazy. If there's a real roster crunch, any chance they try to non-tender Workman and try to bring him back on a minor league deal with generous incentives? Maybe someone out there is willing to give him a major league contract, but it's been a long time since he pitched, and three years now since he pitched well. He didn't show anything during his rehab. He has the option year, so a team might take a chance on him, but I really wonder. I'd keep Kyle Martin over him. There's no roster crunch, so I would keep him on the roster until ST. If he doesn't show improvement then, I would consider removing him from the 40-man.

i agree we are only talking about Red Sox compensation....and a big deterrent for this activity would be a transfer of draft picks to the injured party. That will never happen, I know, I just don't like the idea that any team, not just the Sox, can treated in this duplicitous fashion without direct reparations to the aggrieved party. As you said, there is no chance the Red Sox will get compensation, although I agree that SD should have been punished more severely (ie, forfeiture of draft pick or suspension during a more critical period of the offseason). I disagree with those wishcasting for additional compensation for BOS. Still watching carefully to see what the STL punishment is in the hacking scandal.

JF is managing smarter, Kelly looks like a real asset, both Koji and Taz look like they're back ... if Wright stays hurt, it looks like they have Tazawa, Barnes, and Abad fighting for one spot. BOS is two games behind CLE with 16 to go and they hold the tiebreaker in the event of a tie. Projected rotation (assumes Wright/Salazar are unavailable) G1 - Price (L) vs. Kluber (R) G2 - Porcello (R) vs. Carrasco (R) G3 - Rodriguez (L) vs. Bauer (R) G4 - Buchholz (R)/Pomeranz (L) vs. Tomlin (R) (note: I think it is likely that CLE goes with three starters only, whereas BOS is more likely to go with four and not have anyone pitch on short rest)BOS projected bullpen - Kimbrel, Uehara, Ziegler, Kelly, Ross, Pomeranz/Buchholz, one of Barnes/Tazawa/Abad (I would lean towards Buchholz as the starter, with Pomeranz/Tazawa in the bullpen)CLE projected bullpen - Allen, Miller, Shaw, Otero, McAllister, Manship, Crockett BOS projected lineup - Pedroia, Bogaerts, Ortiz, Betts, Ramirez, Shaw, JBJ, Leon, Young/Benintendi (even with an all-RHP rotation, I would be inclined to split Young and Benintendi)BOS projected bench - Hill, Benintendi/Young, Hanigan, Holt +1 (Hernandez as PR?)CLE projected lineup - Davis, Kipnis, Lindor, Napoli, Santana, Ramirez, Guyer, Crisp, Perez CLE projected bench - Gomes, Naquin, Chisenhall, Martinez +1 Personally, I think CLE is a favorable matchup for BOS in the ALDS, assuming BOS wins the AL East.

Three of the 48 players invited to instrux played above low-A this year: Cosart, Lin and Buttrey.
I certainly understand Lin attending, given the position enhancement, but inviting Cosart and Buttrey seem strange, unless one or both of them are on standby to go to the AFL at some point. I'd keep an eye on that.

Yeah, I don't think Price is in the running for Cy Young, based on his start.
I think the Cy is still to be won and Kluber, Porcello and Britton as the top three (in some order), and Sale, Hamels, Happ, Price, Tanaka, Sanchez and Verlander filling out the rest of the top ten (in some order).
Fulmer will win AL ROY but won't be in the Cy discussion.

WOW interesting list. Snapshot in time as of today. You would think that devers, travis, and shepard yes. Dubon, Cosart, and Ball probably. Basabe an longhi maybe. 4 - 8 players potentially pushing on the list. Lots of interesting decisions coming. I would not be surprised to see a number of these players traded this offseason or by next year's trade deadline. There are not that many free agents next year on the team, and the 2018 free agent class could be very deep. 40-man spots will be at a premium next offseason.

I suggest locking this thread and starting over. Do we have reason to believe that the next thread won't also be a dumpster fire?

Down 2-1, going to the 9th. Salem just squandered 1st and 3rd with one out.

The last couple years have been a blast because of all the high level talent moving to the majors and up through the minors. That said, with all the graduations (and impending graduations of Benni and Yoan) I feel as though the cupboard is going to be a bit barren. There will be some top guys left like Devers, Groome, Kopech, but the depth appears to be challenged. The international sanctions have taken a toll on the places where we can bring in players to facilitate the depth of the system as well. I am curious to hear some others thoughts on how they view the current crop of minor leaguers and who you are looking to to push the farm system forward. Because Dombrowski has pushed the accelerator with respect to Benny and Moncada, there is far less pressure for any position player prospect to be ready next year. This is also true in terms of pitching. The 25-man roster is essentially full, and the 40-man vacancies are more likely to be filled by stopgaps than prospects. This will give the young fellas more time to develop without pressure (either from within or from folks on boards like this) to break into the majors. I don't see the cupboard as barren at all. Non-40-man position prospects of note - (IF) Devers, Travis, Ockimey, Dubon, Chatham, Dalbec, (OF) Basabe, Longhi, Hill, (C) Romanski Non-40-man pitchers of note - (SP) Groome, Kopech, Lakins, Raudes, Shawaryn, (RP) Ball, Martin, Shepherd, Cosart, Ysla, Pennington, Nogosek, Anderson You should think of 2017 as a prospect back-filling year, and watch for the development of some of the under-the-radar prospects to begin popping up on BA lists by the middle of next summer.

Updated as of 9/7
Currently 40 on 40-man roster.
-6 for 40-man FAs: Uehara, Tazawa, Ziegler, Hill, Ortiz, Hanigan (technically, the last two have options but neither will be back) +4 for 40-man adds: Smith, Workman, Sandoval, Swihart (I assume Rutledge will not be added back to the 40-man roster)
That puts the 40-man roster at 38, assuming the option for Buchholz is picked up (he may be traded in the offseason, but let's assume that the team keeps him for now)
-5 for likely 40-man nontenders at end of year: Abad, D.Marrero, Brentz (out of options), Elias (out of options), Holaday
Probable 40-man adds: Basabe, Martin, Haley
There's plenty of room and not many hard choices.
SP - Price, Porcello, E.Rodriguez, Pomeranz, Wright/Buchholz (AAA: Owens, Johnson, Haley) RP - Kimbrel, Kelly, Smith, Barnes, Ross, Hembree (out of options), Wright/Buchholz (AAA: Martin, Workman, N.Ramirez, Ro.Scott) PP - Betts, Pedroia, Bogaerts, H.Ramirez, Sandoval, Bradley, Jr., Benintendi, Moncada, Leon/C.Vazquez Bench - C.Vazquez/Leon, Holt, Young, Shaw (AAA: Swihart, M.Hernandez; A+: Basabe)
Based on the above, that leaves 36 on the 40-man roster, with no spots on the 25-man roster to fill. They could put Kelly and Moncada in AAA and mix-and-match Shaw/Ramirez/Sandoval at 1B/3B/DH, if they wanted to sign any free agents at DH or in the bullpen. Note that there is no guarantee that Smith, Sandoval or Swihart will be ready to start the 2017 season; the above assumes all are healthy.
At minimum, the Red Sox will have at least four spots on the 40-man which they can bolster through Rule 5, minor league FAs, DFAs or trades.

GCL loses 6-2, and its season is over.
DSL loses 2-1, but its season continues. Series is tied 1-1 in a best-of-five.
