Callahan looked good against a pretty bad Tigers lineup. He commanded his fastball well at 90-93, and was able to mix in his curve and change well. Threw a handful of good curves and a couple good changeups, but he mostly beat batters with the fastball.
His mechanics are interesting. It doesn't seem like he would be able to repeat them well but he was pretty consistent throughout the game. The inconsistent secondary pitches and rigid mechanics make me think he may profile best as a reliever, but he's still got a lot of development left.

Also the pick for next year will be #11, which is not protected if they sign a Qualified Free Agent. So it really limits what they can do in free agency.

I would honestly be okay with throwing almost all of the remaining money at Boldt and having him take it. He's that much better than Sheffield, Longhi, etc.
Boldt reminds me a bit of JBJ. Plus defensive center fielder with a plus arm, plus hit tool, good plate discipline and average power potential. I think Boldt may be a step faster than JBJ, but his arm is not quite on the same level. This kid is a classic Red Sox draft pick.

Posted by the PawSox on Facebook and then confirmed by Speier and MacPherson after it was deleted. The 20-year-old is hitting .311/.407/.502 in 219 at-bats this season, bringing his final Double-A numbers to .315/.392/.531 dating back to last season. As detailed in Ian Cundall's Scouting Scratch from yesterday, he had little left to prove at this level. He now moves one step closer to the majors, and it will be interesting to see if the Red Sox treat him like Manny Machado or if they give him a couple-hundred at bats in Pawtucket.

Quick update on Mookie: .287/.420/.510, 46/27 BB/K, .298 BABIP in 253 plate appearances. The only thing that seems unsustainable is his 17% HR/FB ratio. He also has 13 SB and only 1 CS.

This may be premium (hard to know when you have a premium subscription) that focuses on age of prospects and features Trey Ball. Scout.com. sbb.scout.com/2/1298821.htmlNot premium. Also says few pitchers 6' 6" and taller become more than role players, and names only Randy Johnson as an example. Does not mention Halladay 6'6 Sabathia 6'7. He also doesn't mention Wainwright, Josh Johnson, Chris Carpenter, David Price, John Lackey, Matt Latos and Derek Lowe. I like McDaniel but that was a pretty weak article. I understand his point that Ball may not have as much projection as some think, but he has no way of knowing how much muscle or strength he will add. Even if he adds only one tick to his fastball, he is still sitting 92-94, with two potentially plus offspeed pitches from the left side. I'll take that every day.

I like Aaron Blair over Cody Reed by a good amount. The fact that Blair dominated on the Cape makes me think the Red Sox strongly consider him if he's there. A Frazier/Blair Day One would be ideal to me and seems somewhat realistic.

I like Paroubeck a lot too. I really like Billy McKinney, but I'm going to start hating him so it doesn't hurt as much when the Yankees draft him.

Pat Light was removed after one batter (a fly out). Game started in a rain delay, and is delayed again in third. Possible he slipped on the mound. That's speculation though.

Colin Moran is a terrific hitter. If he is there the Sox will absolutely take him. This is a guess, but I feel like there are 5 guys who the Sox are targeting. Appel/Gray/Bryant/Frazier/Moran. If one of them fall, there will be fist pumps in the draft room. If they are all gone, you have Stewart and Shipley. Not a bad consolation prize.

There's going to be some serious heat in that Greenville game with Montas and De Paula throwing. Also the Drive may strike out 15 times.

Stanek was probably my favorite arm coming into the season. He showed true 1:1 stuff as a sophomore, but it has been down across the board this season. Probably too much of a risk to take at 7, especially since he has looked like a reliever for most of the spring.

Regarding Ball, he tops out at 92 so is essentially not a top pick as a pitcher I wouldn't think. He's not advanced in his other "stuff". He's tall. That's not enough. As a hitter he doesn't appear to me to project as a top guy either. He's tweener. No real slot for him. I admire his ability as a 2 way athlete but we went there with Casey Kelly who was an even better 2 way guy but still hasn't really made a big impact. No way he should be a top 10 pick to me although I see him projected there. I think you are way off on Ball. He's been up to 94 several times this season in cold weather. Also, he is 6'6 180 with plenty of room to add muscle. His curve is above-average and his change should be at least average. He's pretty much a better prospect across the board than Henry Owens was coming out of high school. He is on my short list of players I would love the Sox to take at #7.

Does this make Barnes intriguing again?Kidding aside, nice outing. Nice to see him make adjustments. Interesting that both of his two good starts came his second time facing a team. ... Someone on Sickels' minorleagueball gameday suggests that Barnes' troubles are just freaky high BABIP, perhaps luck, perhaps poor defense. Not a lot of defensive stars in Portland's infield or outfield. I saw Barnes in one of his bad starts and it had nothing to do with BABIP. He threw maybe one good curveball and two good changeups all game. He also struggled repeating his delivery which caused him to lose control of his fastball. I've also seen Barnes when he has all three pitches working and he is almost unhittable. I can't guarantee that's why he's struggled in all 3 of his bad starts, but that's what I saw in New Britain.

Portland's rained out. They'll try again tomorrow. What I want to know is why the hell they had an 11:05 start when it's not a getaway day... It is opening weekend in New Britain, so all of the kids from there and the surrounding towns were going to take a field trip during school to go see the game. I've been there for these games before. It is absolute mayhem.
