I'm struck by the number of interesting non-tenders this year. In no particular order: Relievers: Aaron Crow, Juan Nicasio, Craig Stammen, Yusmeiro Petit, Al Albuquerque, Jack Leathersich, Cesar Ramos, Neftali Feliz OF for AAA depth: James Jones, David Lough, Ryan LaMarre Depth starters?: Jacob Turner, Yohan Flande Also, Greg Holland was non-tendered. He's out for the year. I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Alburquerque or Feliz. I like Turner as well. Still young. Any interest in Steve Cishek? Clearly not as a closer, but could be a useful bullpen piece.

OK doesn't show up. 4 WARs would have made Rodriguez a top 8 pitcher in AL last years tied with Quintana at #8. Only pitchers with higher WAR were Keuchel, Price, Gray, Hernandez, Archer, Kluber, and Gallardo. Oh by the way Chris Sale was # 15 at 3.3 WARs Chris Sale got unlucky with ERA. His peripherals were outstanding. His fWAR was over 6. Have to consider both when judging a pitcher. Quick little OT question. What WAR do you guys typically reference here? I look at BR vs. Fangraphs and there are huge differences at times when looking at their versions of WAR. Is there a standard? Is one of the sites more widely accepted as WAR?

If nothing else, he has plenty of options for his at-bat music. Anything by The Stones, Moves Like Jagger, Jagger Swagger, etc.
The next Brock Holt?

Is Jordan Zimmermann still in play? Betts for Zimmermann? Given your SN, I'm assuming you're living up to it I'm 100% serious, but I should have mentioned only if he can be locked up long term. I wouldn't flip Betts for a rental either. Sox would have to be almost certain they can extend him. I'm also on the Bogaerts >>> Betts side of the argument.

Love this deal. Porcello isn't even 26 yet. I hope we can extend him assuming he continues his upwards trend.

Lot's of good arms hit FA next year. Maybe we just ride out this year with a bunch on mid-rotation guys hoping the offense carries us.

The conclusion people have reached is that it pitch-framing has an enormous impact, making it easily the biggest defensive component in all of baseball. That Vazquez might be the best defender in the game because he's he best pitch-framer (or second to Jose Molina) and the best at controlling the running game is not a surprise to anyone. I think I can quickly convince you that the bolded statement is obviously wrong, and plain backwards.......[EDITED] I get what you are saying, but out of those actual chances a catcher has to frame a pitch, how often do they actually affect the umpire's decision? I would imagine it's a very small portion of the time. Like 1 in 10 frame-able pitches. Just pulling that out of nowhere, but based on my layman's opinion while watching baseball games, it rarely impacts the call. I suppose it could be as high as 1 in 5. If I'm not mistaken, the ump is trained to watch the ball, not the catcher's mitt. On top of all that, most infielder's chances are rather binary. Only two outcomes: out or no out. With the catcher's total chances, there are several outcomes: ball, strike, PB, WP (, etc?). If a SS doesn't make a play on one of their chances, it costs the team an out. If the catcher doesn't frame a pitch, who knows what it will lead to. The framing could come into play on any pitch count, not just one that leads to an out/walk. Plus, the pitcher could overcome bad framing by pitching to contact or simply striking the guy out of 4 pitches instead of 3 (though I definitely see a benefit here as it keeps the pitch count down). Love the data, just not sold on pitch framing having the largest impact of any defensive position.

Take what you hear on twitter with a grain of salt and don't over react to every piece of information that is put out there. Information gets out for a specific reason this time of year. Wait? What are you saying? So the Celtics and Red Sox aren't putting together a package deal with Rondo and Lester? Pitt didn't offer Mjolnir (Thor's Hammer) & Willie Stargell's 'stache for Jon Lester? Pitt didn't settle for Willie Tyler and Lester?

How ironic/interesting would it be if we got "he who shall not be named" back in a deal from Pitt...now that we want nothing to do with him.
Still hoping for Meadows over Bell. Not sure why. Maybe a man-crush thing.

I have a sinking feeling that the return might not be what a lot of us hoped for. Hope I'm wrong about that. It seems to me that the Sox need both a young power hitter, preferably an OF, and a young stud pitcher who can project to be a top of the rotation starter. Can't see how Lester fetches both. I think if Lackey was dealt, this could work. Perhaps Lester fetches a young front line starter and Lackey fetches a young power hitting OF. Lackey, as good as he's been, can be more easily replaced that Lester. It seems like Ben wants everybody's best proposals tonight and will sift through it overnight and make his decision tomorrow morning. Alex Speier seems to be the only person that thinks it's still a possibility that Lester returns in the offseason. As much as I like Alex, I think once tomorrow is over, we won't see Lester in a Sox uniform unless he's 37 and has seen his best days. I don't know. If we get Seattle and Pittsburgh together in a 3-team deal, we could get T.Walker and Bell (or Meadows) back. One can dream...

Why not send Escobar to Portland? Based on his age and our depth in Pawtucket, what would be the harm?

Yup, and it's still that way today. It's such a small hassle. One click and it's fine. I'm really not concerned, just thought I would add myself to the list of those experiencing the issue.

I have the same issue as DD (soxprospects.proboards.com - logged in; forum.soxprospects.com - not logged in), but only in Chrome. IE works fine.
Sorry for being dense, but what's the fix? Clearing your cache?

It was still unnecessarily harsh, and your tone is still condescending. This. And you failed to read my more recent post explaining that when I compared his defense to Nomar, I considered Nomar's defense above average. No hard feelings on my end, but you may want to choose your words better.

That's a good point. You rarely hear players talk about taxes, but agents and financial advisers will use it when giving their advice. Some might say what's a few million when dealing with big numbers, but they will give him the numbers. Yeah that is a plus but I dont know they attract Fa here. Its like living on the equator. ahahj Its still upper 90s past 9pm in the summers. Because Cuba is a lot like Canada, climate wise. ;-p Nothing less than going all out for this guy is required. Exactly the bat we need.

Early in his career, I always thought of Nomar as an above average defensive SS (to the naked eye...ignoring stats) who would 1) make errors on plays others didn't get too, and 2) boot routine plays because of focus issues. Sounded a lot like Marerro's scouting report.
Everett's bat is obviously a bad thing.
I'm also considering height as all three guys are 6' or taller.

I love comps. Don't know why. Adam Everett's bat with Nomar's glove? Simply Nomar-lite (very, very, lite)?
Encouraging either way.

There is room on the 40-man right now and we can still transfer Bailey to the 60-day DL. No, there is room on the 40-man BECAUSE Bailey can get transferred to the 60-day. Villarreal took the open 40-man spot. Also, re: postseason rosters: You need to be in the organization as of August 31. Technically, the rule is that you need to be on the 25-man, DL, bereavement list or suspended list on Aug. 31 to be eligible, but a team can add any player who was in the org. as of 8/31 to replace a player on the 60-day DL. Given that Hanrahan, Kalish, Miller, and likely Bailey at least will be on the 60-day at the end of the year, they'll have room to add whoever they want. So if I understand correctly, we don't ahve to bring him up before 8/31 for him to be playoff eligible. That means the only reason to bring him up would be to get his bat in the lineup. If that's the case, I say wait a bit longer. See how this month shakes out. Drew is hitting better and I like the defense of Holt and Snyder. Sure, Xander could take Snyder's place, but baring injuries, I say give him a few more weeks in AAA. We may see WMB finally break out during this time also. Who knows, but with the playoff roster issue out of the way, I see little reason to rush Xander now.
