The Cubs declined Jason Hammel's option(12 mil) in favor a 2 Mil buyout. I get that he tends to fade as the season goes on but I'm not seeing the logic here. If Clay Buccholz (4.78 ERA, 5.06 FIP, 0.5 WAR) is worth 13.5 million, how is Hammel (3.83, 4.48, 1.5) not worth 10?

They got nuttin' on this: www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t515Lol, I was living in Modesto when they voted on this name. I'm thinking that when I was there, they were a Rockies affiliate. Yeah this one is definitely the best. Also, that was an excellent pun lol.

Lovullo to Diamondbacks. That's disappointing.

As a 21 year old, I think Rumble Ponies is pretty funny. I'd be willing to bet a lot of the younger guys playing for them next year will completely embrace the new name, even if they're doing it as a joke.

I was happy with Clay's performance in the second half so I can't be too mad about them picking up his option. But I don't know if I can handle another season of the emotional roller coaster he frequently puts us on.

Josh Johnson has signed a minor league deal with the Giants. He's now missed three full seasons and is coming off his 3rd(!!!) TJS. It would still be cool to see him come back and be even just a passable bullpen arm.

Unless they knew he was driving the boat (which they don't), I was a bit surprised they released this info. While I'm not judging or condoning this, I'm sure a lot of entertainers/athletes we all love and respect use this drug (cocaine). I assume MLB drug tests examine for this drug. If so, what is the protocol for a positive test? I'm probably mistaken but I think I read recently that MLB doesn't test for "recreational" drugs unless there's a reasonable concern that a player had used it. Obviously MiLB tests for this stuff Regularly, but for some reason I think MLB doesn't. Again, I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I've heard this before Edit: just to say -- no mater what these 3 young men did that night, it doesn't take away from the tragedy of them losing their lives. Tragic? Absolutely. But we'll never know exactly what happened on the boat that night. Wether he/they were intoxicated doesn't matter at this point. They lost their lives and I can only mourn for their friends and families.

Interesting idea. I don't think the Sox defense would take that large of a hit, seeing as how Mookie can play CF or RF, with Benintendi being a quality defender himself. From the Cubs perspective I think there's at least a chance they would consider a deal like this, but I think the Sox would be more hesitant. I personally would sell high on JBJ and wouldn't be opposed to this trade; however, the question marks surrounding both Schwarber and Soler are noticeable enough that I don't see this ever happening.

I was rooting for the Cubs to finally win it after 100+ years, but so much for that. The Indians' pitching is ridiculous. Tito deserves a lot of praise for the way he's operated the team this postseason. God I wish we still had him as manager

I'm still undecided as to who should win the AL Cy Young. In my opinion, Porcello, Kluber, and Sale should be the top 3 in whatever order. But honestly, did anyone on earth think for a second, before the season started, that Porcello would even be mentioned for this award?

I've been a long time fan of Freeman, but I don't see a way the Sox acquire him without the offer starting with at least Devers. He has the 4th highest wrc+ in the NL this year while also providing good defense at first. I think if the Braves were willing to trade him, and I'm sure teams have tried to get him already, it would need to be an overwhelming offer.

You don't think Clay might be the fourth starter if he hs a great month? I can't see Clay being the 4th starter unless Wright doesn't come back, and Rodgriguez is either hurt/terrible this month

Saw Toronto sent Aaron Sanchez to Dunedin (FSL) to save his innings. What is going to do down there, not pitch? Strange move IMO. All they would have to do is give him a DL stint. Buys them some extra service time? I don't understand this move. And service time as a factor just wouldn't make sense. He's clearly one of the Jays best pitchers, so sending him to the minors is strange. Control his innings? Sure. That totally makes sense. Demote him after performing excellently this season, just to "control innings?" No.

I cringed a little when they reported Beni might go back to a platoon when Chris Young returns. I know he was signed to mash lefties, but Beni absolutely deserves every day at bats

I don't have a problem with Shaw's comments. He's young, in his first full season, and they're in the hunt for a playoff berth. I can understand why he wants to always be playing. And as someone stated above, Aaron Hill hasn't exactly set the world on fire in a Sox uniform.

I do not think JF is a good manger, but I absolutely do not see the sense in firing him at this point in the season. This team still has a wild card spot and is only 1 1/2 games back in the division. Does anyone actually believe a managerial change 3/4 into the season will make that much of a difference towards our post season chances? Considering he is the only reason we are 1.5 games back in the division, rather than 5 games up? Absolutely. Farrell to Lovullo at this point could be the difference between a wild card play in game and winning the division. Not because Lovullo's skills will allow us to win more, but because firing Farrell would probably save us 3 wins between here and October 1st. I absolutely agree that he is not the right man to manage this team. I suppose I just don't understand the logic of a managerial change in August. The only person who could possibly take over this late is Lovullo. And at this point I have to assume JF totally ignores Lovullo's input. There's no way he would make the same in game choices as Farrell does. I think you're right but I can't recall a time when a team fired their manager this late in the season and was still competitive in the playoffs. I'm not saying it wouldn't help, I just wish this would have happened months ago. Or even before the season began. Edit: just to say the other two posts are correct as well. This team would be better off without him managing. I wish it would have happened much earlier and at this point I wonder how much a managerial change would affect the team

I wonder what Brentz and Benintendi's projections are vs LHP, respsectively. I find it hard to believe that the difference (if Benny isn't better period) isn't more than made up by AB's superior defense. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but is there a website to view minor league splits for batters vs L/R?

Maybe I don't know enough but would it make sense to just switch Bogaerts and Ortiz's spots from the "regular" lineup? Why bat Pedroia 4th tonight?
