This was from the LAA offseason chat on MLBTR. He guessed paying down to $180-200m would get a “solid” return. live.jotcast.com/chat/angels-outlook-23-16648.html I don't think it's that high. Trout has seven years and $248MM left on his deal running from age 32 to 38. We saw teams pay guys like Bogaerts, Judge and Machado deep into their late 30s last offseason. Brandon Nimmo got 8/162 running through age 37 and isn't as good a player even as late-career Trout 3:03 If they paid it down to the $180-200MM range (and he was willing to move), I think they could get a solid return

It will be interesting to follow. I wouldn’t think only contenders would be after him. He isn’t too terribly expensive and with a change of scenery someone could flip him after a hot start.

Don’t want to add to the Ohtani talk in The pitching thread since he isn’t going to pitch in 2024 but I just don’t see how he is a roster fit especially at something like 10 yrs and $500M. Screams of trying to get interest, jersey and ratings up rather than improving our weaknesses. You could probably get Trout in a salary dump and add Yamamoto or Nola for cheaper than Ohtani. Side note though it would be incredible watching him every night.

Looking at payrolls I didn’t realize Glasnow makes a jump from roughly $5M to $25M. Rays in general have a few guys with big jumps I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a big name or two from them traded. Right now I’d put Glasnow up there with Cease and Keller likely to get dealt.

I heard Passan on the baseball is dead pod and he thinks Yamamoto gets over $200M and Rosenthall comped Carlos Rondon in yesterday’s Athletic column for Montgomery.

I don’t know if we can go into next year with this as an unknown. Drury would be a good trade candidate. Shouldn’t cost a ton and LAA is probably rebuilding.

This could be a crazy winter meeting. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2023/10/01/milwaukee-brewers-mlb-playoffs-craig-counsell-world-seires/71017628007/The Padres are internally leaning towards trading All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, which would free up about $30 million – while trying to slash their payroll by about $50 million. The Padres won’t get nearly the return that they sent to the Washington Nationals two years ago to acquire Soto, but they should get two top-15 prospects in a team’s farm system, besides freeing themselves an arbitration-record payday for Soto. The Giants or the Boston Red Sox could be possible fits while scouts predict that he’ll be a first baseman or DH within two years.

This one hurts. I’ll never forget game 3 when he ate those innings and gave up his game 4 start. I can only imagine how great a teammate he was. RIP.

If SD is cutting payroll I’d be all over Kim. He’d help our team as much as anyone considering the black hole we had at 2B this year. Great D, baserunning, pretty good OBA. They have Merrill who could be ready mid season for the middle infield and maybe take on a questionable salary like Suarez.

I think James Click might have the easiest transition for an out of house candidate with his background with Bloom. Seems he got a raw deal In Houston with the owner nixing trades and negotiating FA deals behind his back.

I don’t think I’ve seen his named mentioned by the talking heads but how would you feel about Jeff Luhnow?

I was pretty surprised yesterday when I saw the news. I like Bloom and thought then general direction of the organization was pointing up and set for his first true offseason where he had the resources to build his team. Was he perfect, nope but nobody is. He was a young first time GM who had some on the job training. I’m willing to bet he learned from his mistakes and will be better for it next time he gets a job.

I think any Trout trade would be subsidized by LA. I’d like the thought of him hitting in the middle of the order for us but like others have said not if the contract hamstrings the team.

Who would be a few obvious upgrades from Bloom? I think I’d prefer to give him another 1-2 years and continue his plan. He’s done well setting the foundation (farm + young core guys) and I think this sets up to be the first offseason he can sign and trade for some higher profile guys with us being so far under the tax to start the winter. Glad it’s not my call.

If the Mets finish outside the top 6 picks their first goes back 10 spots as well.

Gray did have a mediocre season in New York, but by 2024 that will have been 6 years ago and he's been much better every year since. I'd be okay with him. True but didn’t they trade him bc the lights were basically too bright in a big market.

I wonder how much the Ohtani TJ and Urias off field issues will drive up the remaining market. I like Gray but he seems like a mid market guy after some struggles in NY.

I think we should pump the brakes a tad but with that being said I’d be perfectly fine going into 2024 with a Duvall/Abreu platoon in RF.

Man that stinks. Curious how this will effect his free agency. Judge got 9 and $360 would Ohtani get that without the defense? $1 million incentive per start, maybe something like a $5 million bonus for each 75 innings pitched.
LAA will have an interesting offseason and I would not be shocked if Trout asked for a trade. They’re going nowhere.

I think the defense will have to be a big priority this offseason with Devers, Casas and Yoshida combining for -25 OAA. I personally don’t think they’ll move Devers yet so I bet Yoshida goes into 2024 as the DH and maybe resign Duvall and hope him, Story and Urias (maybe Drury trade) can provide enough RH power.

I just don’t think the Mariners will trade Gilbert or Kirby especially for Duran. That package would probably have to have Mayer in it. Maybe a Verdugo for Emerson Hancock if they deal a young starter. I do think they’ll be an interesting team to follow this offseason. I’d imagine that Ohtani would be their 1st priority. Maybe they would need to shed a little payroll to make it work? Castillo has a salary increase to over $24M next year and Robbie Ray set for $25m.

Didn’t we offer Eovaldi more money than he eventually got with Texas but we gave him a time limit and then went ahead with the offseason?

Hopefully he can get it together and is fine off the field. I’ve always felt he was a platoon OFer helped with Fenway splits and think we’ll get pennies on the dollar this offseason. I thought last week we should go with Duval in RF and it’s more obvious now.

Good for Ramirez for calling out Anderson’s tough guy act.
